Ashwagandha whole herb is the dried root of Withania somnifera, one of the most important plants in Ayurveda. The roots are long, light brown on the outside and whitish inside, with an earthy, slightly bitter taste and a faint horse-like smell, which gives the herb its Sanskrit name. Dried roots are the raw material for ashwagandha powder, extracts, teas and Ayurvedic formulations.

Arizone International supplies Ashwagandha roots in whole and cut form to extract manufacturers, Ayurvedic companies, herbal tea makers, traders and exporters.

Where Ashwagandha Roots Come From

Ashwagandha is a small shrub of the nightshade family. India is the world's main producer, and the Mandsaur and Neemuch districts of Madhya Pradesh are the largest growing and trading area, along with Nagaur in Rajasthan. The crop is sown after the monsoon and harvested in winter, about five to six months later. The roots are dug up, washed, cut from the stems, dried in the sun and graded by thickness and colour.

Root Grades

  • Grade ALong, thick, white and starchy roots with few side roots. Preferred for powder and premium extracts.
  • Grade BMedium roots, slightly thinner and darker.
  • Grade C and Lateral RootsThin roots and side roots, used mainly for extraction.

We can supply whole roots, cut roots (for teas and decoctions) and root powder, and we can match your grade and size requirements.

Key Compounds

  • WithanolidesNatural steroidal lactones, such as withaferin A and withanolide A, used as quality markers.
  • AlkaloidsSuch as withanine and somniferine.
  • Starch and FibreMake up most of the dried root; high-starch white roots are considered good quality.

Traditional Use

In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is a Rasayana, a rejuvenating herb, traditionally used to support strength, vitality, calm and restful sleep. The root is often boiled in milk or taken as powder with warm milk and honey. These are traditional uses, not approved medical claims.

Applications

  • Ashwagandha powder and extract production
  • Ayurvedic churnas, Rasayanas and decoctions
  • Herbal teas and cut-root blends
  • Supplement manufacturing (capsules, tablets and gummies)
  • Wholesale herb trading and export

Safety

Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy. People with thyroid or autoimmune conditions, or those taking medicines, should seek medical advice before using ashwagandha products.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Withania somnifera root, free of stems and leaves)
  • Grade, length and thickness of roots
  • Moisture, foreign matter, total ash and acid-insoluble ash
  • Withanolide content, where specified
  • Heavy metals and pesticide residues

Packaging and Storage

Ashwagandha roots are packed in 25 to 50 kg PP or jute bags with a liner, or pressed bales for large lots. Store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from moisture and pests.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Thick, white, starchy roots give the best powder and extract yield, so specify the grade you need. For extraction, lateral roots and lower grades can be more economical, but they must still be free of stems and leaves.
