Barley Grass
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Barley Grass is the young green leaf of the barley plant, Hordeum vulgare, harvested long before the plant forms grain. Dried barley grass is a bright green raw material for green powders, juices, teas and superfood blends, and it is especially popular in Japan and in health food markets worldwide.
Arizone International supplies dried Barley Grass in bulk, whole or cut, for powder processors, supplement makers, beverage brands, wholesalers and exporters. Barley grass powder is also available separately.
Harvested at the Right Moment
Barley is one of the oldest cereals in the world, grown for bread, beer and animal feed. For barley grass, the plant is cut at a young stage, usually when it is around 20 to 30 cm tall and before the stem starts to form joints. At this point the leaves are tender and at their nutritional peak. Once the plant begins to develop grain, the leaves become tougher and their nutrient profile changes. In India, barley is grown mainly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana.
After cutting, the grass is washed and dried at low temperature to preserve its green colour and nutrients, then cleaned and cut or milled.
Japan's Aojiru
In Japan, a green drink called aojiru, meaning "green juice", has been popular for decades. It is traditionally made from kale or young barley leaves, and barley grass aojiru is sold widely in sachets and as a daily health drink. This has helped make barley grass one of the best-known green superfood ingredients.

A Note on Gluten

Young barley grass harvested before seed formation is therefore generally considered free of gluten, but cross-contact with grain can occur during harvesting and processing. Products marketed as gluten-free should be tested to meet the applicable limits.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Young barley grass harvested before jointing has the best colour and taste. For drinks and smoothies, choose fine powder that mixes easily; for teas, choose cut dried leaf.
Barley grass powder keeps its bright green colour best in sealed, light-proof packs. For organic or gluten-free claims, ask for the relevant certificates and test reports before launch.
