Wintergreen Oil is a strong, sweet, minty and medicinal essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria procumbens and related Gaultheria species. It is almost pure methyl salicylate and is best known as the characteristic scent of pain-relief balms, liniments and sports rubs. It is also used in oral care, flavours and speciality products, but it must be handled with great care.
Arizone International supplies Wintergreen Oil for balm and liniment manufacturers, oral-care brands and flavour companies, with full safety documentation.
About Wintergreen
Gaultheria procumbens is a small, creeping evergreen shrub native to North America, with shiny leaves and bright red berries. Its name comes from its ability to stay green through the winter. Native American peoples used wintergreen leaves in teas and traditional remedies. Today, much natural wintergreen oil comes from Gaultheria fragrantissima, which grows in the Himalayas of Nepal, India and China, as well as from China. In India, it grows in the hills of the north-east and in the Nilgiris.
When the leaves are soaked in warm water, an enzyme releases methyl salicylate, which is then distilled. Sweet birch oil has almost the same composition.
Aroma and Composition
- Methyl SalicylateUsually 96% to 99%, giving the strong, sweet, minty-medicinal scent.
- Trace ComponentsSmall amounts of other compounds that give natural oil a slightly fuller aroma than synthetic methyl salicylate.
Applications
- Pain-relief balms, liniments, sports rubs and muscle gels, as permitted by regulations
- Toothpaste, mouthwash and oral-care flavours
- Chewing gum, root beer and confectionery flavours, where permitted
- Speciality fragrances
Important Safety Warning
Wintergreen oil is highly toxic if swallowed. One teaspoon (about 5 ml) of methyl salicylate is roughly equal to more than 20 adult aspirin tablets and can be fatal, especially for children. It must never be taken internally, must be kept in child-resistant containers and must be stored well out of reach of children. It must not be used by people who are allergic to aspirin, who are taking blood-thinning medicines, who have bleeding disorders, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding. On the skin, it must be well diluted and never applied under heat pads or tight bandages, and it should not be used on large areas of skin. Many countries regulate the concentration of methyl salicylate in consumer products.
