Winter Savory Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Winter Savory Oil is a strong, warm, spicy and herbaceous essential oil steam distilled from the flowering tops of Satureja montana, a small aromatic shrub of the mint family. It is rich in carvacrol and has a powerful, thyme-like and oregano-like scent. It is used in food flavours, natural personal care products, feed additives and speciality aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Winter Savory Oil for flavour houses, natural product manufacturers, feed additive companies and speciality aromatherapy brands.
About Winter Savory
Winter savory is a hardy, evergreen perennial native to the mountains of southern Europe, the Balkans and North Africa. It has narrow, glossy leaves and small white or pale purple flowers. It is closely related to summer savory (Satureja hortensis), an annual with a softer flavour. Both have been used in European cooking for centuries, especially with beans and lentils, which is why savory is called "the bean herb" in Germany (Bohnenkraut). The oil is produced mainly in the Balkans, especially Albania, Croatia and Bosnia, as well as in France and Spain.

Research Interest
Winter savory oil and its main compound carvacrol have been studied in laboratory settings for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. These are research findings, not approved medical claims.
Important Safety Note
Winter Savory Oil is a strong skin and mucous membrane irritant because of its high carvacrol and thymol content. It must always be heavily diluted and should never be applied undiluted. It should not be used on children, during pregnancy, or by people taking blood-thinning medicines. Avoid contact with eyes. Not for internal use except as a regulated food flavour. Keep out of reach of children. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Blending Tips
In small amounts, winter savory blends well with rosemary, lavender, lemon, pine, oregano, thyme and bergamot.
