Wormwood Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Wormwood Oil is a strong, bitter, green, herbaceous and slightly camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Artemisia absinthium. It is famous as the plant behind absinthe. Because it can be very high in thujone, it is used only in small, controlled amounts in perfumery, regulated flavours and speciality products.
Arizone International supplies Wormwood Oil for perfumers, licensed flavour and spirit producers, and speciality users, with full safety documentation.
About Wormwood
Wormwood is a silvery-grey, aromatic perennial native to Europe, North Africa and Asia, including the Himalayan regions of India, where it is known in Unani medicine as afsanteen. It is one of the most bitter herbs known. For centuries, it has been used in bitters, vermouth and herbal liqueurs. The word "vermouth" comes from the German "Wermut", meaning wormwood.
Wormwood and Absinthe
In the 19th century, absinthe, a strong green spirit flavoured with wormwood, anise and fennel, became extremely popular in France among artists and writers. It was blamed for madness and was banned in many countries in the early 20th century. Modern research suggests that the problems were mainly caused by high alcohol content rather than wormwood itself. Absinthe was legalised again in the EU and other countries, with strict limits on thujone content, which in the EU is 35 mg/kg for bitter spirits.
Aroma and Composition
The composition of wormwood oil varies widely by chemotype and origin. Common components include:
- Beta-ThujoneOften the main component in many oils, giving a sharp, herbal note.
- Sabinyl Acetate and Cis-EpoxyocimeneFound in some chemotypes, with little thujone.
- ChamazuleneSometimes present, giving a blue-green colour.
Applications
- Perfumery, in tiny amounts, for bitter-green, herbal accords
- Absinthe, vermouth and bitters, by licensed producers within thujone limits
- Speciality and research applications
Important Safety Warning
Wormwood oil can contain very high levels of thujone, a neurotoxin that can cause seizures, kidney damage and other serious effects. It must never be taken internally in its pure form, must not be used in aromatherapy or massage, and must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on children, or by people with epilepsy. In fragrances and flavours, it must only be used within IFRA and food/beverage regulations. It must be stored securely and clearly labelled. Keep out of reach of children. Please read the SDS before use.
