Violet Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Violet Oil refers to aromatic products from the sweet violet, Viola odorata. The most important is Violet Leaf Absolute, a powerful, intensely green, leafy and cucumber-like extract used in fine perfumery. The soft, powdery scent of violet flowers is usually recreated as a fragrance oil, because violet flower absolute is extremely rare and costly. Violet oils are used in perfumes, attars, cosmetics and home fragrance.
Arizone International supplies Violet Leaf Absolute and violet flower fragrance oils for perfumers, attar makers, cosmetic brands and home fragrance companies.
About Sweet Violet
Sweet violet is a small, low-growing perennial native to Europe and Asia, with heart-shaped leaves and tiny, deep purple flowers that have a sweet, powdery scent. It was loved by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and it became hugely popular in 19th-century Europe, especially in Toulouse, France, which is still famous for its violet sweets and perfumes. In India, a related species, Viola odorata, is known as banafsha and is used in Unani medicine, especially in banafsha sherbet and herbal teas.
Violet Leaf vs Violet Flower
- Violet Leaf AbsoluteSolvent extracted from the leaves, mainly in France and Egypt. It has a strong, green, leafy, cucumber-like scent from the compound 2,6-nonadienal (violet leaf aldehyde). It is used in tiny amounts to add freshness and naturalness to perfumes.
- Violet Flower ScentThe sweet, powdery flower scent comes mainly from ionones. Natural violet flower absolute is almost never produced today, so perfumers recreate the scent using alpha-ionone, beta-ionone and methyl ionones.
A Curious Fact About Violets
Ionones, the compounds that give violets their scent, can temporarily block the sense of smell. This is why the scent of violets seems to disappear and then return a moment later.
Applications
- Fine perfumery, especially green, powdery and floral accords
- Attars and traditional perfumes
- Cosmetics, lipsticks and body care
- Soaps, candles and home fragrance
- Violet flavours for sweets and liqueurs, where permitted
Safety and Dilution
Violet Leaf Absolute is extremely powerful and must be used in very small amounts and always diluted. It may cause sensitisation in some people, and IFRA standards apply. Violet fragrance oils may contain allergens that must be declared on labels in some markets. A patch test is recommended. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
