Vetiver Oil is a deep, earthy, woody, smoky and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from the roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides (formerly Vetiveria zizanioides), a tall tropical grass. Known in India as khus, it is one of the most important base notes in perfumery and is also used in attars, cosmetics, aromatherapy, sherbets and cooling products.
Arizone International supplies Vetiver Oil in Haitian, Indonesian and Indian (khus) grades for perfumers, attar makers, cosmetic brands and aromatherapy companies.
Khus: India's Cooling Root
Vetiver is native to India, where it has been used for centuries. Its roots are woven into khus mats and curtains, which are hung in doorways and sprinkled with water in summer, cooling and scenting the air as it passes through. Khus sherbet is a popular summer drink. Vetiver grows well in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states. Wild North Indian khus from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan is famous for its rich, deep scent and is used in the traditional ruh khus attar of Kannauj.
Today, Haiti is the world's largest producer of vetiver oil, followed by Indonesia (Java), India and Réunion. Vetiver is also planted around the world to prevent soil erosion, because its deep, dense roots hold soil firmly in place.
Types of Vetiver Oil
- Haitian VetiverClean, fresh, woody and slightly sweet. The most widely used in fine perfumery.
