Vanilla Oil captures the rich, sweet, creamy and warm aroma of vanilla beans from the orchid Vanilla planifolia. Because vanilla cannot be steam distilled into a true essential oil, "vanilla oil" is usually a vanilla absolute, a CO2 extract, an oleoresin, or an infusion of vanilla in a carrier oil. It is used in perfumery, flavours, cosmetics, candles and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Vanilla absolute, CO2 extract, oleoresin and vanilla-infused oils for perfumers, flavour houses, cosmetic brands and candle makers.
About Vanilla
Vanilla is the fruit (pod) of a climbing orchid native to Mexico. The Totonac people of Mexico were the first to cultivate it, and the Aztecs used it to flavour chocolate drinks. Today, Madagascar produces most of the world's vanilla, especially the famous Bourbon vanilla. Other producers include Indonesia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and India. In India, vanilla is grown in Kerala and Karnataka.
Vanilla flowers must be pollinated by hand outside Mexico, and the green pods must then be cured for several months by sweating and drying in the sun. This labour-intensive process is why natural vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron.
Forms of Vanilla Oil
- Vanilla AbsoluteSolvent extracted from cured beans, very rich and concentrated. Used in fine perfumery.
- Vanilla CO2 ExtractA clean, true-to-bean extract used in perfumery and flavours.
- Vanilla OleoresinA thick extract used mainly in food flavours.
- Vanilla Infused OilVanilla beans infused in a carrier oil, used in body oils and cosmetics.
- Vanilla Fragrance OilA perfumery compound, often with vanillin, suitable for candles and soaps.
Aroma and Composition
Natural vanilla contains more than 200 aroma compounds. The most important is vanillin, usually around 1.5% to 3% in cured beans, which gives the sweet, creamy flavour. Other compounds, such as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillic acid and anisyl alcohol, add depth and make natural vanilla richer than pure synthetic vanillin.
Applications
- Fine perfumery, especially gourmand and oriental fragrances
- Food and beverage flavours, ice cream, bakery and chocolate
- Body oils, lotions and lip balms
- Candles, soaps and home fragrance
- Aromatherapy blends for warmth and comfort
Safety and Dilution
Vanilla extracts are generally well tolerated but should be diluted before skin use. Vanilla absolute may contain trace residual solvents within permitted limits. Some people can be sensitive to vanilla or vanillin. A patch test is recommended. Keep out of reach of children. Only food-grade vanilla extracts should be used in foods.
