Valerian Root Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Valerian Root Oil is a strong, earthy, musky, woody and slightly pungent essential oil steam distilled from the roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis and related species. It has a very distinctive aroma that many people find unusual on its own, but in tiny amounts it adds warmth and depth to perfumes. It is used in aromatherapy, perfumery, flavours and traditional preparations.
Arizone International supplies Valerian Root Oil, including Indian valerian (tagar) oil, for aromatherapy brands, perfumers, flavour houses and Ayurvedic product makers.
About Valerian
Valeriana officinalis is a tall perennial herb native to Europe and Asia, with clusters of small, sweet-smelling pink or white flowers. While the flowers smell pleasant, the dried roots have a strong, earthy odour that has been compared to old cheese or wet socks, caused by isovaleric acid. Interestingly, cats are strongly attracted to valerian, much like catnip.
In India, Indian valerian (Valeriana jatamansi, also known as Valeriana wallichii), called tagar or sugandhbala, grows in the Himalayas of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It has been used in Ayurveda for centuries and is also used in incense.

Traditional Use and Research
Valerian root has been used in Europe since ancient Greek and Roman times as a calming herb, and the European Medicines Agency recognises valerian root preparations as herbal medicines for mild nervous tension and sleep problems. These approvals relate to root extracts taken as medicines, not to the essential oil.
Safety and Dilution
Valerian Root Oil should be used in small amounts and always diluted before skin use. It may cause drowsiness, so it should not be used before driving or with alcohol or sedative medicines. It is not recommended during pregnancy or for young children. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.

Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from other products, as the scent is strong.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Valerian oil has a strong, earthy smell, so perfumers use only traces of it in woody and leather accords. Store it away from other oils, as its odour can transfer easily.
