Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Sugandha Mantri Oil is a sweet, floral, woody and slightly spicy essential oil steam distilled from the rhizomes of Homalomena aromatica, an aromatic plant of the arum family native to north-east India. It is a traditional Indian aromatic oil, rich in linalool, used in perfumery, attars, incense, cosmetics and Ayurvedic preparations.
Arizone International supplies Sugandha Mantri Oil for perfumers, attar makers, incense manufacturers and Ayurvedic product brands.
About Sugandha Mantri
Homalomena aromatica is a perennial herb with large, heart-shaped leaves that grows in the moist, shaded forests of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and other north-eastern states, as well as in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand. Its thick, aromatic rhizomes are known in Assam as gondhsoi or sugandhmantri. They have been used by local communities for generations in traditional remedies, in perfumes and to scent clothes.
The rhizomes are dug up, cleaned, sliced and dried before distillation. Because the plant has been collected mainly from the wild, over-harvesting has become a concern, and organisations in north-east India have encouraged its cultivation to protect wild populations and support farmers.
Aroma and Composition
- LinaloolUsually the main component, often 50% to 70% or more, giving a sweet, floral note similar to rosewood and ho wood.
- Terpinen-4-ol and Alpha-TerpineolAdding a soft, spicy, woody character.
- Other Terpenes and SesquiterpenesContributing depth.
The overall scent is sweet, floral, woody and slightly spicy, and it is sometimes used as an Indian alternative to rosewood oil.
Applications
- Perfumery and attars, as a natural linalool-rich floral-woody note
- Incense, dhoop and agarbatti
- Soaps, cosmetics and hair oils
- Aromatherapy blends
- Ayurvedic and traditional preparations
- Natural linalool source
Traditional Use
In north-east India, sugandhmantri rhizomes have been used traditionally for skin care, joint comfort and as an insect repellent in stored clothes. These are traditional uses, not approved health claims.
Safety and Dilution
Sugandha Mantri Oil should always be diluted before skin use. Linalool can oxidise over time, and oxidised linalool can sensitise skin, so store the oil properly. A patch test is recommended. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Blending Tips
Sugandha mantri blends well with sandalwood, vetiver, rose, jasmine, lavender, bergamot, patchouli and cedarwood.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Homalomena aromatica)
- Linalool content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
- Screening for synthetic linalool adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles and HDPE containers. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Its dried rhizome powder is also used in local incense and herbal hair washes.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Sugandha mantri is a linalool-rich Indian oil that can replace part of rosewood or ho wood in floral-woody blends and attars. Store it in full, closed containers to prevent linalool oxidation.
