Tangerine Oil is a sweet, juicy, bright and slightly tart citrus essential oil cold pressed from the peel of tangerines, a group of mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulata and its varieties, such as Citrus tangerina). It has a cheerful, fresh scent and is used in beverages, confectionery, perfumery, cosmetics, children's products and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Tangerine Oil for flavour houses, beverage companies, fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.
Tangerine vs Mandarin
Tangerines are a type of mandarin orange. The name "tangerine" comes from Tangier in Morocco, the port from which the fruit was shipped to Europe and America in the 19th century. In the trade, tangerine oil usually refers to oil from the deeper orange-red varieties grown mainly in the Americas, such as the Dancy tangerine, while "mandarin oil" usually refers to Mediterranean mandarin oils, especially from Italy.
Tangerine oil tends to be sweeter and more orange-like, while mandarin oil is more floral and complex because of its dimethyl anthranilate content. Tangerine oil is mainly produced in the USA (Florida), Brazil, Argentina and South Africa.
Aroma and Composition
- LimoneneUsually 85% to 95% of the oil.
- Gamma-Terpinene and MyrceneAdding freshness.
- Decanal, Octanal and Alpha-SinensalPresent in small amounts but important for the sweet, juicy character.
Applications
- Soft drinks, juices and citrus beverages
- Confectionery, desserts and food flavours
- Perfumes, colognes and body sprays
- Children's toiletries and bath products
- Aromatherapy blends for a cheerful, relaxing mood
- Candles, room sprays and home fragrance
Safety and Dilution
Tangerine Oil is generally considered non-phototoxic, but it should still be diluted before skin use. Like all citrus oils, it oxidises quickly, and oxidised limonene can sensitise skin, so store it properly and use it within its shelf life. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use except as a regulated flavour.
Blending Tips
Tangerine blends well with lavender, neroli, chamomile, ylang-ylang, frankincense, cinnamon, clove and other citrus oils.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and origin
- Gas chromatography profile
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aldehyde content and evaporation residue
- Screening for synthetic limonene or sweet orange oil adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store in a cool, dark place, ideally refrigerated.
Tangerine is a favourite in blends for children's bedrooms and evening diffusers because of its soft, sweet, cheerful scent. In flavours, it gives a juicier, rounder citrus note than orange, and it works especially well in fruit drinks, sweets and ice creams. Some formulators use it together with a touch of mandarin to add floral depth.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Tangerine is a favourite for children's toiletries, drinks and sweets because of its soft, sweet citrus note. Store it cold and in full containers, as citrus oils oxidise quickly once opened.
