Tagetes Oil is a strong, sweet, fruity, green and herbaceous essential oil steam distilled from the flowering plants of Tagetes minuta, a species of marigold. It has a distinctive apple-like and slightly bitter aroma and is used in perfumery, flavours, and speciality products. It is also produced in India, where marigolds are widely grown.
Arizone International supplies Tagetes Oil for perfumers, flavour houses and speciality fragrance companies.
About Tagetes
Tagetes minuta, also called Mexican marigold or khaki bush, is a tall, strong-smelling annual native to South America. It has spread to many parts of the world, including Africa and India. It is a different plant from calendula (pot marigold) and from the common Indian garland marigold (genda, Tagetes erecta), although they belong to the same genus. In India, Tagetes minuta grows wild and is cultivated in the Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir for oil production. South Africa, Egypt and Argentina are other producers.

The overall scent is powerful, sweet, fruity and green, with a slightly bitter herbal edge. It is used in very small amounts in perfumery.

- Fruit flavours, especially apple and tropical fruit, where permitted
- Speciality fragrance compounds

Important Safety Note: Phototoxicity
Tagetes oil is phototoxic, meaning it can cause skin reactions such as redness and burning when treated skin is exposed to sunlight. IFRA restricts tagetes oil in leave-on skin products to a very low level, and requires that the level of certain phototoxic components is controlled. It should always be highly diluted, and treated skin should be protected from sunlight. It is not recommended during pregnancy or for children. Not for internal use except as a regulated food flavour. Keep out of reach of children.
Tagetes vs Calendula
Tagetes and calendula are both called "marigold" but are very different plants. Calendula oil (usually infused) is gentle and used widely in baby care and skin care. Tagetes oil is a strong, phototoxic essential oil used mainly in perfumery. Please check the botanical name when buying.
Quality Parameters

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
