Star Anise Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Star Anise Oil is a sweet, warm, liquorice-like essential oil steam distilled from the star-shaped fruits of Illicium verum, a small evergreen tree native to southern China and Vietnam. It is one of the world's main sources of natural anethole and is widely used in food and beverage flavours, confectionery, oral care, liqueurs and soaps.
Arizone International supplies Star Anise Oil for flavour houses, beverage and confectionery manufacturers, oral-care brands and aroma chemical users.
About Star Anise
Star anise fruits are made of six to eight boat-shaped sections arranged in a star, each containing a shiny seed. They are harvested green and dried until they turn reddish-brown. China (especially Guangxi) and Vietnam produce most of the world's star anise. In India, star anise is known as chakri phool or badiyan and is an important spice in biryani, garam masala and chai. It is also one of the five spices in Chinese five-spice powder.
Star anise is also a source of shikimic acid, which has been used as a starting material in the manufacture of the antiviral medicine oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Star Anise vs Anise
Star anise oil and anise oil (Pimpinella anisum) taste almost the same because both are rich in trans-anethole, but they come from completely different plants. Star anise oil is cheaper and more widely produced, so it is often used in place of anise oil in flavours and liqueurs.
Aroma and Composition
- Trans-AnetholeUsually 80% to 92%, giving the sweet liquorice flavour.
- LimoneneAdding a fresh lift.
- Estragole, Anisaldehyde and FoeniculinPresent in small amounts.
Like anise oil, star anise oil can solidify in cool temperatures because anethole crystallises. Gentle warming restores it.
Applications
- Liqueurs and anise-flavoured spirits, such as pastis and sambuca
- Confectionery, liquorice sweets and chewing gum
- Bakery, beverages and food flavours
- Toothpaste and mouthwash
- Soaps and household fragrances
- Natural source of anethole for aroma chemicals
Important Safety Note: Japanese Star Anise
Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) looks similar to Chinese star anise but is toxic, because it contains anisatin, a nerve toxin. Contamination of star anise with the Japanese species has caused poisonings in the past. Genuine Illicium verum must be carefully identified and tested. We supply only verified Illicium verum oil.
Safety and Dilution
Star anise oil should be diluted for skin use. It is not recommended in aromatherapy during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for young children. People with hormone-sensitive conditions should seek advice, as anethole has mild oestrogen-like activity. Use within IFRA and food flavour regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
