St Johns Wort Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
St. John's Wort Oil is a deep red botanical oil made by infusing the fresh flowering tops of Hypericum perforatum in a carrier oil, usually olive or sunflower oil. It is also called hypericum oil or red oil. It is not a steam-distilled essential oil but an infused oil, traditionally used in skin care, massage oils and balms.
Arizone International supplies St. John's Wort infused oil, as well as the rare essential oil on request, for skin care brands, massage and balm manufacturers, and natural cosmetic companies.
About St. John's Wort
St. John's wort is a perennial herb with bright yellow, star-shaped flowers, native to Europe and Asia and now found worldwide. It blooms around 24 June, the feast day of St. John the Baptist, which gives the plant its name. When its leaves are held up to the light, they show tiny translucent dots, which is why the species is called "perforatum". When the flowers are crushed, they release a red pigment. In the Himalayan regions of India, several Hypericum species grow wild.
How the Red Oil Is Made
Traditionally, fresh flowers and buds are packed into a jar of olive oil and left in the sun for several weeks. During this time, hypericin and other compounds are released, turning the oil a deep ruby red. The oil is then filtered. Modern producers use controlled processes to make a consistent product.
Key Compounds
- Hypericin and PseudohypericinRed pigments that give the oil its colour.

Traditional Use
In European folk tradition, St. John's wort oil has been used for centuries on minor skin irritations, small wounds and sore muscles. The European Medicines Agency recognises St. John's wort oil as a traditional herbal medicine for minor skin inflammation and small wounds. These are traditional uses, not claims for this specific product.
Important Safety Notes
Hypericin can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight (photosensitivity). Skin treated with St. John's wort oil should not be exposed to strong sunlight or UV light. Taken internally, St. John's wort is well known for interacting with many medicines, including contraceptive pills, blood thinners and antidepressants, so it must not be taken internally except under medical supervision in approved products. A patch test is recommended. Keep out of reach of children.
