Spruce Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Spruce Oil is a fresh, sweet, balsamic and forest-like essential oil steam distilled from the needles and twigs of spruce trees, mainly black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca), as well as Norway spruce (Picea abies) in Europe. It is softer and sweeter than pine and is used in aromatherapy, bath and wellness products, men's grooming, household products and perfumery.
Arizone International supplies Spruce Oil for aromatherapy brands, wellness and spa companies, men's grooming brands and fragrance houses.
About Spruce Trees
Spruces are tall evergreen conifers of the pine family that grow in the cold northern forests of Canada, the northern United States, Scandinavia and Russia. Black spruce, native to Canada, is the most popular source of spruce essential oil. Norway spruce is the traditional Christmas tree in much of Europe. In India, the Himalayan spruce (Picea smithiana) grows at high altitudes but is not a major commercial source of oil.
Canada, especially Quebec, is the main producer of black spruce oil. Spruce tips have also been used for centuries to make spruce beer, and sailors once drank it to prevent scurvy.
Aroma and Composition
- Bornyl AcetateOften the main component in black spruce, giving a sweet, balsamic, soft scent.
- Camphene and Alpha-PineneAdding a fresh, woody lift.
- Delta-3-Carene, Limonene and Beta-PineneContributing a clean freshness.
The overall scent is fresh, sweet, soft and balsamic, less sharp than pine and very comforting.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends for grounding and fresh air
- Bath, sauna and spa products
- Massage oils and muscle-rub blends
- Men's grooming, beard oils and aftershaves
- Candles, room sprays and seasonal home fragrance
- Soaps, shampoos and household products
Traditional Use
First Nations peoples of Canada have used spruce in traditional remedies and in steam baths for generations. In aromatherapy, spruce oil is often used in grounding and breathing blends. These are traditional uses and not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Spruce Oil should always be diluted before skin contact. Like other conifer oils, it oxidises over time, and oxidised oil can irritate or sensitise skin, so it should be stored in full, tightly closed containers. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Blending Tips
Spruce blends well with fir, pine, cedarwood, frankincense, lavender, rosemary, orange, bergamot and peppermint.
