Spikenard Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Spikenard Oil, also known as Jatamansi Oil, is a heavy, earthy, woody and musky essential oil steam distilled from the roots and rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a small flowering plant of the high Himalayas. It is one of the most ancient and revered aromatic oils, used in perfumery, attars, Ayurveda, aromatherapy and hair care.
Arizone International supplies Spikenard (Jatamansi) Oil from legal, documented sources for perfumers, attar makers, Ayurvedic and hair care brands, and aromatherapy companies.
About Jatamansi
Jatamansi grows at altitudes of about 3,000 to 5,000 metres in the Himalayas of Nepal, India (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim), Bhutan and Tibet. Its name comes from the Sanskrit words "jata" (matted hair) and "mansi", because its roots are covered in hairy, reddish-brown fibres. In Ayurveda, jatamansi is valued as a calming herb and an ingredient in hair oils.
Spikenard is also famous in the ancient world. It was traded from India to Egypt, Rome and the Middle East, and it is mentioned in the Bible, where Mary of Bethany anoints Jesus with a costly ointment of "pure nard".
Conservation Status
Because of over-harvesting from the wild, Nardostachys jatamansi is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and is included in CITES Appendix II. Its export from India in raw form is restricted, and Nepal is a major legal source of cultivated and permitted material. We supply spikenard oil only with proper origin and CITES documentation.
