Spearmint Oil is a fresh, sweet, cool and gently minty essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Mentha spicata and related species. It is milder and sweeter than peppermint because it contains carvone rather than much menthol. It is widely used in chewing gum, toothpaste, confectionery, beverages, personal care and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Spearmint Oil in natural and rectified grades for oral-care brands, confectionery and flavour companies, and cosmetic manufacturers.
About Spearmint
Spearmint is a perennial herb of the mint family native to Europe and Asia. It gets its name from its pointed, spear-shaped leaves. It is the mint used in Moroccan mint tea, mint juleps and many mint sauces. The main producers of spearmint oil are the United States, China and India. In India, spearmint is grown in the mint belt of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, alongside Mentha arvensis and peppermint.
Native and Scotch Spearmint
In the USA, two main types are grown: Native spearmint (Mentha spicata) and Scotch spearmint (Mentha x gracilis). Both are rich in carvone, but Scotch spearmint has a slightly different flavour and is often preferred for chewing gum. Indian and Chinese spearmint oils are also widely traded.
Aroma and Composition
- L-CarvoneUsually 55% to 75%, giving the sweet, cool spearmint flavour. It is the mirror-image form of the D-carvone found in caraway and dill, which smells completely different.
- LimoneneUsually 10% to 25%, adding a fresh lift.
- 1,8-Cineole, Dihydrocarvone and MentholPresent in smaller amounts.
Applications
- Chewing gum, mints and confectionery
- Toothpaste, mouthwash and oral care
- Beverages, teas and flavours
- Shampoos, body washes and personal care
- Aromatherapy blends, especially for gentler use than peppermint
- Natural source of L-carvone
Spearmint vs Peppermint
Peppermint oil is high in menthol, giving a strong cooling effect. Spearmint oil is high in carvone and has a sweeter, softer taste with less cooling. Spearmint is often preferred for products for children and for people who find peppermint too strong.
Safety and Dilution
Spearmint Oil should be diluted before skin use. It is gentler than peppermint, but carvone can cause skin sensitisation in some people, and IFRA limits apply. Avoid contact with eyes. Not for internal use except as a regulated flavour. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and origin
- Carvone and limonene content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and flavour evaluation
- Screening for synthetic carvone adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Spearmint gives a sweeter, milder mint for children's toothpaste and chewing gum. It can be blended with peppermint to adjust the cooling level and flavour of oral care products.
