Scotch Pine Oil is a fresh, clean, balsamic and forest-like essential oil steam distilled from the needles and twigs of Pinus sylvestris, the Scots pine. It is the classic pine essential oil used in aromatherapy, bath and sauna products, massage blends, household products and perfumery.

Arizone International supplies Scotch Pine Oil for aromatherapy brands, spa and wellness companies, household product manufacturers and fragrance houses.

About the Scots Pine

The Scots pine is the most widely distributed pine in the world, growing from Scotland and Scandinavia across Europe and Russia to Siberia and parts of Central Asia. It is the national tree of Scotland and is easily recognised by its orange-red upper bark and blue-green needles. The tree has long been used for timber, tar and resin. The needle oil is produced mainly in Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Russia and the Baltic countries.

Aroma and Composition

  • Alpha-PineneUsually the main component, often 30% to 50%, giving a fresh, resinous note.
  • Delta-3-CareneAdding a sweet, piney freshness.
  • Beta-Pinene, Limonene and MyrceneContributing brightness.
  • Bornyl AcetateAdding a soft, balsamic sweetness.

The overall scent is fresh, clean, green and resinous, like walking through a pine forest after rain.

Applications

  • Aromatherapy and inhalation blends for fresh air and clear breathing
  • Sauna oils, bath salts and spa products
  • Massage oils and muscle rubs
  • Soaps, shower gels and shampoos
  • Household cleaners and air fresheners
  • Men's fragrances, forest and woody accords
  • Seasonal candles and home fragrance

Traditional Use

In European traditions, pine needle baths and pine inhalations have been used for centuries for a fresh, invigorating effect, and pine oil is still popular in sauna culture. These are traditional uses and not medical claims.

Safety and Dilution

Scotch Pine Oil should always be diluted before skin contact. It oxidises easily when exposed to air, and oxidised oil can irritate or sensitise skin. It should be stored in full, tightly closed containers and used within its shelf life. Not recommended in high concentrations for young children. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.

Blending Tips

Scotch pine blends well with cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender, rosemary, lemon, peppermint and fir needle.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Pinus sylvestris) and origin
  • Gas chromatography profile, including bornyl acetate
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Peroxide value
  • Screening for turpentine adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Scotch pine is a classic for sauna oils, bath salts and winter home fragrance. Dilute it in an emulsifier before adding it to bath or sauna water so it disperses evenly.
