Sandalwood Oil is a soft, creamy, warm, woody and long-lasting essential oil steam distilled from the heartwood of sandalwood trees. East Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) is the most famous and prized, while Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) and other species are also widely used. Sandalwood is one of the most treasured materials in perfumery, attars, skin care, incense and religious rituals.
Arizone International supplies Sandalwood Oil in legally sourced grades for perfumers, attar makers, luxury cosmetic brands and incense manufacturers.
India's Sacred Wood
Sandalwood (chandan) has been part of Indian culture for thousands of years. It is used in worship, in tilak paste, in Ayurveda, in carvings and in the classic attars of Kannauj, where sandalwood oil is the traditional base for distilling flowers. Mysore sandalwood from Karnataka was once considered the finest in the world, and Karnataka was known as the "land of sandalwood".
Over-harvesting and smuggling led to a severe decline of sandalwood trees in India. Santalum album is now listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, and harvesting and trade are strictly controlled by the government. In recent years, rules have been relaxed to allow private farmers to grow sandalwood, and plantations are being developed in India and in Australia, where Santalum album is also now cultivated.
Main Types of Sandalwood Oil
- East Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album)The classic sandalwood, with the highest santalol content and a rich, creamy scent. Very expensive.
- Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum)Native to Western Australia, lower in santalols, with a drier, slightly sharper scent. More affordable and sustainably harvested.
- Plantation Santalum albumGrown in Australia and India, offering a legal, sustainable source of true sandalwood.
