Rosewood Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Rosewood Oil is a sweet, soft, floral, woody and slightly spicy essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Aniba rosaeodora, a tree of the Amazon rainforest. It was once one of the most important natural sources of linalool in perfumery. Because the tree is now protected, genuine rosewood oil is rare, and sustainable alternatives such as ho wood oil are often used instead.
Arizone International supplies CITES-compliant Rosewood Oil where available, as well as sustainable rosewood alternatives, for perfumers, aromatherapy brands and cosmetic manufacturers.
About Brazilian Rosewood
Aniba rosaeodora, known in Brazil as pau-rosa, is a tall evergreen tree of the laurel family that grows in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, Peru, French Guiana and Suriname. Its wood has a sweet, rosy smell. Rosewood oil became famous in the 20th century as a key ingredient in classic perfumes, including Chanel No. 5.
For many years, entire trees were cut down for distillation, and wild populations fell sharply. Aniba rosaeodora is now listed as endangered and is included in CITES Appendix II, which means international trade in its oil requires permits. Some sustainable production continues in Brazil from managed plantations and from leaves and branches, which can be harvested without killing the tree.
Rosewood oil should not be confused with Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia, sheesham), which is a timber tree and not a source of this oil.

Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and plant part (wood or leaf)
- CITES documentation
- Linalool content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Screening for ho wood or synthetic linalool substitution
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
If you do not have CITES paperwork for rosewood, consider ho wood oil or rosewood leaf oil, which give a similar soft, woody-floral note. Always keep CITES documents on file for any natural rosewood oil you buy.
