Rosemary Oil is a fresh, herbaceous, woody and camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia rosmarinus (formerly Rosmarinus officinalis). It is one of the most popular essential oils in hair care, aromatherapy, personal care and perfumery, and it is also used in food flavours.

Arizone International supplies Rosemary Oil in several chemotypes for hair care brands, cosmetic manufacturers, aromatherapy companies and flavour houses.

About Rosemary

Rosemary is an evergreen shrub of the mint family native to the Mediterranean. Its name comes from the Latin "ros marinus", meaning "dew of the sea", because it grows well near the coast. It has been associated with memory since ancient Greece, where students wore rosemary garlands while studying. Rosemary oil is produced mainly in Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and France. In India, rosemary is grown on a smaller scale in the Nilgiris and in Himalayan states.

In 2018, botanists moved rosemary into the Salvia genus, making it officially a sage, but the old name is still widely used on labels.

Chemotypes

  • Rosemary ct. 1,8-CineoleFrom Morocco and Tunisia. Fresh and eucalyptus-like, the most common type for hair care and aromatherapy.
  • Rosemary ct. CamphorFrom Spain. Stronger and more camphoraceous, often used in massage and warming blends.
  • Rosemary ct. VerbenoneFrom France and Corsica. Softer and gentler, often used in skin care.

Aroma and Composition

  • 1,8-CineoleGiving a fresh, penetrating note.
  • CamphorAdding a cool, camphoraceous character.
  • Alpha-Pinene and CampheneContributing a fresh, woody lift.
  • Borneol and VerbenonePresent in varying amounts depending on chemotype.

Applications

  • Hair oils, shampoos, conditioners and scalp treatments
  • Aromatherapy blends for focus and clarity
  • Massage oils and muscle rubs
  • Soaps, shower gels and personal care
  • Perfumery, especially fresh, herbal and cologne accords
  • Food flavours and natural antioxidant applications

Research Interest

A widely cited 2015 study compared rosemary oil with minoxidil for a type of hair loss and found similar results after six months. Other studies have looked at rosemary aroma and memory. These are limited research findings and do not support medical claims for hair loss treatment.

Safety and Dilution

Rosemary Oil should always be diluted before skin use. Camphor and cineole types should not be used on or near the face of young children, and rosemary is traditionally avoided during pregnancy and by people with epilepsy or high blood pressure. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use except as a regulated flavour.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity and chemotype
  • Gas chromatography profile
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Aroma evaluation
  • Screening for eucalyptus, camphor or turpentine adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

For hair oils and shampoos, the 1,8-cineole type from Morocco or Tunisia is the usual choice. For food use, remember that rosemary extract, not the essential oil, is the ingredient used as a natural antioxidant.
