Ravensara Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Ravensara Oil is a fresh, spicy, slightly sweet and camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Ravensara aromatica, a tree native to Madagascar. It is often confused with ravintsara oil, which comes from a different plant. Ravensara is used in aromatherapy, perfumery and natural personal care products.
Arizone International supplies Ravensara Oil and Ravintsara Oil, clearly labelled, for aromatherapy brands, fragrance companies and personal care manufacturers.
Ravensara vs Ravintsara: An Important Difference
These two names cause much confusion in the essential oil trade:
- Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica)A tree of the laurel family native to Madagascar. Its leaf oil is usually rich in limonene, sabinene, methyl chavicol (estragole) and methyl eugenol, with a spicy, anise-like note. Its composition varies widely.
- Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8-cineole)A cineole chemotype of the camphor tree, introduced to Madagascar from Asia. Its oil is rich in 1,8-cineole, with a fresh, eucalyptus-like scent. It is very popular in French aromatherapy.
For many years, ravintsara oil was sold under the name "ravensara", so some older aromatherapy literature mixes them up. We always label the botanical name clearly so you know exactly what you are buying.
About Ravensara
Ravensara aromatica is an evergreen tree of Madagascar's rainforests. Its name comes from the Malagasy words for "good leaf". Its bark, leaves and fruit are all aromatic. The oil is produced in Madagascar, usually in small quantities.
Aroma and Composition
Ravensara leaf oil has a fresh, spicy, slightly sweet and anise-like scent. Its main components vary but commonly include limonene, sabinene, alpha-pinene, methyl chavicol and methyl eugenol. Buyers should always request a GC report.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends, often for freshness and a clear feeling
- Perfumery, adding a spicy, anise-like note
- Natural personal care products
- Massage and body blends, in diluted form
Safety and Dilution
Ravensara Oil should always be diluted before skin use. Some batches contain significant amounts of methyl chavicol (estragole) and methyl eugenol, which are restricted in many markets because of safety concerns at high doses. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or on young children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
Sustainability
Madagascar's forests are under pressure, and responsible harvesting of wild trees is important. We work with suppliers who follow sustainable leaf-harvesting practices where possible.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Ravensara aromatica or Cinnamomum camphora ct. cineole)
- Gas chromatography profile, including estragole and methyl eugenol
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles and HDPE containers. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Always confirm whether you need Ravensara aromatica or Ravintsara (cineole camphor), as the two names are often mixed up. Ask for a GC report to check estragole and methyl eugenol levels.
