Pine Oil is a fresh, strong, piney and slightly camphoraceous oil widely used in disinfectants, floor cleaners, household products, soaps and industrial applications. Commercial pine oil is usually rich in alpha-terpineol and is produced from pine trees, either by distillation of pine stumps and wood or by chemical conversion of turpentine. It is one of the most familiar "clean" fragrances in homes around the world.

Arizone International supplies Pine Oil in various terpineol grades for household and disinfectant manufacturers, soap makers, mining and industrial users.

How Pine Oil Is Made

  • Synthetic Pine OilMost pine oil today is made by treating turpentine (alpha-pinene) with acid and water to form alpha-terpineol and related alcohols. This is a standard industrial process.
  • Natural Steam-Distilled Pine OilObtained by distilling resinous pine stumps and wood. Less common today.
  • Pine Needle OilA separate essential oil from pine needles, used in aromatherapy and fragrance (please see our Pine Needle Oil page).

Pine Oil in India

India produces turpentine mainly from the resin of chir pine (Pinus roxburghii) in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Pine oil made from this turpentine is widely used in Indian phenyl, floor cleaners and household disinfectants. "White phenyl" products commonly use pine oil emulsified with soap.

Grades and Composition

Pine oil is usually sold by its total terpene alcohol or alpha-terpineol content. Common grades include:

  • Pine Oil 50% (about 50% terpineol)
  • Pine Oil 65%
  • Pine Oil 70%
  • Pine Oil 85% to 90% (high-purity grades)

The main components are alpha-terpineol, with smaller amounts of beta-terpineol, fenchyl alcohol, borneol, limonene and other terpenes.

Applications

  • Floor cleaners, white phenyl and household disinfectants
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Air fresheners and deodorisers
  • Mining, as a frothing agent in mineral flotation
  • Textile processing, as a wetting and dispersing agent
  • Paints, varnishes and industrial solvents

Disinfectant Claims

Pine oil has well-known cleaning and deodorising properties and has been used in disinfectant products for decades. However, disinfectant claims are regulated in most countries, and finished products must meet the relevant standards and registrations in each market.

Safety

Pine oil is an irritant to skin and eyes and is harmful if swallowed. It must be handled with gloves and eye protection, used in well-ventilated areas and kept out of reach of children and pets. It is combustible and must be stored away from flames. Not for internal use. Please read the SDS before handling.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
