Pine Needle Oil vs Pine Oil
The term "pine oil" can mean different things. Pine needle oil is a true essential oil from the needles and twigs, with a fresh, green, forest-like scent. Industrial "pine oil" is usually made from pine stumps or from turpentine, and it is rich in alpha-terpineol; it is used mainly in disinfectants and cleaners. This page covers the needle oil.
About Pine Trees
Pines are evergreen conifers that grow across the Northern Hemisphere. Scots pine is the main species used for needle oil and is produced in Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Russia and other European countries. Dwarf pine (Pinus mugo) is another important source, with a very fresh, sweet scent. In India, chir pine (Pinus roxburghii) and blue pine (Pinus wallichiana) grow in the Himalayas, and chir pine resin is the main source of Indian turpentine.

Traditional Use
Pine needle baths and inhalations have a long tradition in central and northern Europe, and pine needle oil is used in aromatherapy for a fresh, uplifting atmosphere. These are traditional uses and not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Pine Needle Oil should always be diluted before skin contact. It oxidises easily, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate or sensitise skin, so it should be stored in full, tightly closed containers and used within its shelf life. Not recommended for young children in high concentrations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Quality Parameters

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Pine needle oil adds a natural forest note to bath, sauna and cleaning products. Keep containers full and closed, as pine oils oxidise quickly and oxidised oil can irritate skin.
