Petitgrain Oil is a fresh, green, woody and slightly floral essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange tree. It shares some of the freshness of neroli but has a greener, more herbaceous and woody character. It is widely used in colognes, fine perfumery, soaps, cosmetics and aromatherapy.

Arizone International supplies Petitgrain Oil in Bigarade (Paraguay) and other types for perfumers, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.

Why "Petitgrain"?

"Petitgrain" is French for "little grains". The oil was originally distilled from the small, green, unripe fruits of the bitter orange tree, which looked like tiny grains. Later, producers switched to distilling leaves and twigs, which gave more oil at a lower cost, but the old name stayed.

Types of Petitgrain Oil

  • Petitgrain BigaradeFrom bitter orange leaves, the classic and most valued type, produced in Paraguay, France, Italy, Morocco and Egypt. Paraguay is the largest producer.
  • Petitgrain CitronnierFrom lemon tree leaves, with a fresh, lemony note.
  • Petitgrain MandarinierFrom mandarin leaves, rich in dimethyl anthranilate, with a sweet, soft scent.
  • Petitgrain BergamotFrom bergamot leaves, fresh and green.

Please specify which petitgrain you require. Most commonly, "petitgrain" refers to Bigarade.

Aroma and Composition (Bigarade)

  • Linalyl AcetateUsually 45% to 60%, giving a fresh, sweet, bergamot-like note.
  • LinaloolUsually 20% to 30%, adding floral softness.
  • Alpha-Terpineol, Geranyl Acetate and Neryl AcetateContributing green, floral and fruity notes.

Applications

  • Colognes, eau de toilette and fresh fragrances
  • Fine perfumery, especially citrus, fougère and chypre accords
  • Soaps, shower gels and shampoos
  • Skin care, especially for oily skin
  • Aromatherapy blends for calm and balance
  • Deodorants and body sprays

Petitgrain, Neroli and Bitter Orange

The bitter orange tree gives three oils: petitgrain from leaves and twigs, neroli from blossoms, and bitter orange oil from the peel. Petitgrain is the most affordable of the three and is often used to support or extend neroli in fragrances.

Safety and Dilution

Petitgrain Oil is not phototoxic, unlike the peel oil from the same tree. It should still be diluted before skin use. Linalool and linalyl acetate can oxidise over time, so store it properly. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.

Quality Parameters

  • Type and origin
  • Linalyl acetate and linalool content by gas chromatography
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Ester value
  • Screening for synthetic adulteration

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Paraguayan petitgrain is distilled from the leaves of bitter orange trees that grow widely there, often on small family farms.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Petitgrain is the most affordable member of the bitter orange family, so it is often used to support or extend neroli in colognes and skin care. It is not phototoxic, which makes it useful for leave-on products.
