Peru Balsam Oil is a sweet, warm, rich, vanilla-like and balsamic aromatic oil obtained from the resin of Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae, a tall tree of Central America. Despite its name, it comes mainly from El Salvador, not Peru. It is used in perfumery as a soft, sweet base note and fixative, and in some soaps and traditional preparations.
Arizone International supplies Peru Balsam Oil in regulated, fragrance-compliant grades for perfumers, fragrance houses and speciality product manufacturers.
Why "Peru" Balsam?
During Spanish colonial times, balsam collected in Central America was shipped to Europe through the port of Callao in Peru, so Europeans called it "Peru balsam". In reality, most of it has always come from the "Balsam Coast" of El Salvador. Workers beat and heat the bark of the tree, then wrap it in cloth to soak up the balsam that seeps out. The cloth is boiled to release the balsam, which is then purified.
Forms of Peru Balsam
- Crude Peru BalsamA dark, thick, sticky liquid. Not used in fragrances because it is a strong skin allergen.

Important Allergy and Regulatory Note
Peru balsam is one of the most common causes of fragrance allergy and is part of the standard patch test series used by dermatologists. For this reason, IFRA prohibits the use of crude Peru balsam as a fragrance ingredient and only allows certain distilled oils and extracts at limited levels. The EU also restricts its use. Our Peru balsam materials are supplied in compliant grades with the relevant documentation. People with a known balsam of Peru allergy should avoid products containing it. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Peru balsam oil blends well with vanilla, benzoin, tonka, labdanum, sandalwood, patchouli, rose, ylang-ylang and cinnamon.
