Oregano Oil is a strong, warm, spicy and herbaceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of oregano, mainly Origanum vulgare and Origanum onites. It is rich in carvacrol and is used in food flavours, animal feed additives, natural personal care products and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Oregano Oil for flavour houses, feed additive companies, natural product manufacturers and aromatherapy brands.
About Oregano
Oregano is a hardy herb of the mint family that grows on sunny, rocky hillsides around the Mediterranean. It is an essential herb in Greek, Italian and Mexican cooking, especially on pizza and in tomato sauces. Turkey is the world's largest producer of oregano and oregano oil, followed by Greece and other Mediterranean countries. The name comes from the Greek words for "joy of the mountains".
Several related plants are also called oregano, including Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) and Spanish oregano (Thymbra capitata). In India, Origanum vulgare grows wild in the Himalayas and is known locally as ban tulsi or sathra.
Aroma and Composition
- CarvacrolUsually the main component, often 60% to 85% in good-quality oil, giving the strong, spicy, warm aroma.
- ThymolPresent in varying amounts, closely related to carvacrol.
- Gamma-Terpinene and p-CymenePrecursors of carvacrol and thymol, adding freshness.
Carvacrol content is the main quality marker, and buyers usually specify a minimum percentage.
Applications
- Food flavours for pizza, sauces, meat products and seasonings
- Animal and poultry feed additives
- Natural personal care products, such as soaps and foot care
- Natural household cleaning products
- Aromatherapy blends, used carefully
- Oregano oil softgels and supplements, where permitted
Research Interest
Carvacrol and oregano oil have been widely studied in laboratory settings for antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. In animal nutrition, oregano oil is used as a natural feed additive. These are research findings and do not support medical claims for humans.
Important Safety Note
Oregano oil is one of the strongest skin irritants among essential oils because of its high carvacrol content. It must always be heavily diluted before any skin contact and should never be applied undiluted. It should not be used on children, during pregnancy, or by people on blood-thinning medicines. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Internal use is only for approved food flavours and supplements, within local regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical species and origin
- Carvacrol and thymol content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and colour evaluation
- Screening for synthetic carvacrol or thyme oil adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For feed additives and natural cleaners, specify a minimum carvacrol content, commonly 60% to 80%. In human supplements, oregano oil is usually supplied pre-diluted in a carrier oil and filled into softgels.
