Patchouli Oil is a rich, earthy, woody, sweet and slightly camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the dried, fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin. It is one of the most important base notes and fixatives in perfumery, and it is also widely used in cosmetics, soaps, incense, attars and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Patchouli Oil in light, dark and iron-free grades for fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, attar makers and aromatherapy brands.
About Patchouli
Patchouli is a bushy herb of the mint family native to tropical Asia. The name is believed to come from the Tamil words "pachai" (green) and "ilai" (leaf). Indonesia, especially Sulawesi and Sumatra, produces most of the world's patchouli oil. India grows patchouli on a smaller scale in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam and other states.
In the 19th century, Indian traders packed patchouli leaves with silk and cashmere shawls shipped to Europe to protect them from moths. European buyers came to associate the scent with genuine Indian textiles. Patchouli later became iconic in the 1960s and 1970s and remains a key note in many famous perfumes.
How Patchouli Oil Is Made
The leaves are harvested, dried and allowed to ferment slightly, which breaks down the cell walls and improves oil yield. They are then steam distilled. Fresh patchouli oil has a sharp, green note, but it improves with age, becoming smoother, richer and more mellow, like fine wine.
