Neroli Oil is a light, fresh, sweet and delicately floral essential oil steam distilled from the white blossoms of Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange tree. It is one of the most treasured and expensive oils in perfumery and aromatherapy, and it is the heart of classic eau de cologne.
Arizone International supplies Neroli Oil for perfumers, luxury cosmetic and skin care brands, and aromatherapy companies.
The Story of Neroli
Neroli takes its name from Anne Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola, a 17th-century Italian noblewoman who made the scent fashionable by using it to perfume her gloves and bath. Neroli became a key ingredient in the original eau de cologne created in Cologne in the early 18th century and has been central to fine perfumery ever since.
The bitter orange tree gives three different oils: neroli from the flowers, petitgrain from the leaves and twigs, and bitter orange oil from the peel. Neroli is produced mainly in Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and France. The flowers are picked by hand in spring and distilled quickly. About 1,000 kg of blossoms are needed to make roughly 1 kg of neroli oil, which explains its high price.
Neroli and Orange Flower Water
When the blossoms are steam distilled, two products are obtained: neroli oil, which floats on top, and orange flower water (the hydrosol). Orange flower water is widely used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean sweets, pastries and drinks. Orange flower absolute, made by solvent extraction, has a richer, heavier floral scent than neroli.
Aroma and Composition
- LinaloolUsually 30% to 45%, giving a soft, sweet floral note.
- Limonene and Beta-PineneAdding a fresh citrus lift.
- Linalyl AcetateContributing sweetness.
- Nerolidol, Farnesol and Methyl AnthranilatePresent in small amounts, giving depth and a honeyed, floral richness.
Applications
- Fine perfumery, colognes and floral fragrances
- Luxury skin care, face oils and serums
- Aromatherapy blends for calm and relaxation
- Premium body care and bath products
- Flavours, in small amounts, where permitted
Safety and Dilution
Neroli Oil is generally regarded as gentle and is not phototoxic, unlike the peel oil from the same tree. It should still be diluted before skin use. Linalool can oxidise over time, so store it properly. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Quality and Authenticity
Because neroli is expensive, it is often adulterated with petitgrain oil or synthetic materials. We supply genuine neroli with GC reports, and we also offer clearly labelled neroli dilutions and neroli-type blends for cost-sensitive projects.
