Onion Oil is an extremely powerful, pungent and sulphurous essential oil steam distilled from crushed onion bulbs (Allium cepa). A tiny amount gives the full flavour of cooked onion, so it is used mainly in food flavours, seasonings, snacks, soups and sauces. Onion oil is also used in traditional hair care products, usually in diluted or infused forms.
Arizone International supplies Onion Oil in pure, diluted and infused forms for food processors, seasoning and flavour companies, and hair care brands.
India and Onion
India is one of the two largest onion producers in the world, along with China. Maharashtra is the leading onion-growing state, and the Lasalgaon market near Nashik is Asia's largest onion trading centre. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Bihar are also major producers. Onions are a staple in almost every Indian kitchen.
Types of Onion Oil
- Onion Essential Oil (Pure)Steam distilled from crushed onions. The yield is extremely low, often around 0.002% to 0.03%, so large amounts of onions are needed. It is very concentrated and used in tiny doses in foods.
- Diluted Onion OilPure onion oil diluted in a vegetable oil for easier dosing in food.
- Onion Hair Oil (Infused)Onion or onion extract infused in carrier oils such as coconut, sesame or castor oil, often with herbs. Popular in Indian hair care.
Please specify which type you require.
Key Compounds
- Dipropyl Disulphide and Methyl Propyl DisulphideGiving the characteristic onion flavour.
- Dipropyl Trisulphide and Other SulphidesAdding pungency and depth.
- ThiosulphinatesPresent in fresh onion but mostly broken down during distillation.
Applications
- Seasonings, spice blends and snack flavours
- Soups, sauces, gravies and ready meals
- Meat products and marinades
- Onion-flavoured chips, namkeen and crackers
- Hair oils and hair care products (infused grades)
Traditional Use in Hair Care
Onion juice has been used in Indian households as a traditional hair remedy, and a small study published in 2002 looked at onion juice for patchy hair loss. This is limited research, and onion hair oils should not be marketed with medical claims.
Safety
Pure onion oil is extremely strong and can irritate the eyes, skin and mucous membranes. It should be handled with gloves and good ventilation. Food use must follow local regulations. For hair products, only properly diluted, infused grades should be used, and a patch test is recommended. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Type (pure, diluted or infused)
- Sulphide profile by gas chromatography for pure oil
- Specific gravity and refractive index
- Aroma and flavour evaluation
- Food-grade compliance where required
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in sealed aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums to contain the strong odour. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from other products.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Pure onion oil is too strong to weigh accurately in small batches, so most food makers use a 1% or 5% dilution in vegetable oil. Store it sealed and away from other ingredients to avoid odour transfer.
