Nutmeg Oil is a warm, sweet, spicy and slightly woody essential oil steam distilled from the dried kernels (seeds) of Myristica fragrans, the nutmeg tree. It is a classic spice oil used in food flavours, beverages, bakery, perfumery, soaps and traditional preparations.
Arizone International supplies Nutmeg Oil in East Indian and West Indian types for flavour houses, food and beverage manufacturers, perfumers and Ayurvedic product makers.
About Nutmeg
The nutmeg tree is a tall evergreen native to the Banda Islands in Indonesia. For centuries, these tiny islands were the only source of nutmeg in the world, and nutmeg was once worth more than its weight in gold. The Dutch fought for control of the Banda Islands, and in 1667 they famously traded the island of Manhattan (New Amsterdam) to the British in exchange for Run, a small nutmeg island. Today, nutmeg is grown in Indonesia, Grenada (whose flag shows a nutmeg), India and Sri Lanka. In India, nutmeg (jaiphal) is grown mainly in Kerala.
East Indian vs West Indian Nutmeg Oil
- East Indian Nutmeg OilFrom Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It has a fuller, spicier aroma, with higher myristicin and safrole content.
- West Indian Nutmeg OilFrom Grenada. It has a lighter, fresher scent, with lower myristicin.
Indian nutmeg oil is close to the East Indian type.

Nutmeg oil should only be used in small amounts. Myristicin and elemicin can cause hallucinations, nausea and other toxic effects at high doses, and safrole is restricted in foods and cosmetics in many markets. Nutmeg oil must never be taken internally except as a regulated food flavour, and it should not be used during pregnancy. It must be diluted before skin use. Use within IFRA standards and food flavour regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
