Niaouli Oil is a fresh, clean, camphoraceous and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Melaleuca quinquenervia (also called Melaleuca viridiflora). It is a relative of tea tree and cajeput oils and is used in aromatherapy, skin care, balms, oral care and personal care products.
Arizone International supplies Niaouli Oil for aromatherapy brands, personal care and skin care manufacturers, and balm and ointment makers.
About Niaouli
Niaouli is a tree with papery, peeling bark, native to New Caledonia, eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It was introduced to Madagascar, which is now one of the main producers of niaouli oil. In New Caledonia, the tree is so common that it is a national symbol. Traditionally, niaouli oil was exported from the French port of Gomen in New Caledonia, and for this reason it was once sold as "Gomenol" in France.
Chemotypes
Niaouli oil exists in several chemotypes, depending on where it grows:
- 1,8-Cineole TypeThe most common, especially from Madagascar, with a fresh, eucalyptus-like scent.
- Viridiflorol TypeRich in viridiflorol, a sesquiterpene alcohol with a softer scent.
- Nerolidol TypeFound in some regions, with a sweeter, floral note.
Aroma and Composition (Cineole Type)
- 1,8-CineoleUsually 40% to 60%, giving a fresh, penetrating note.
- Alpha-Pinene and LimoneneAdding freshness.
- Viridiflorol and Alpha-TerpineolContributing a soft, sweet depth.
Applications
- Aromatherapy and inhalation blends for clear breathing
- Skin care for oily or blemish-prone skin
- Balms, rubs and ointments
- Mouthwash and oral-care products, where permitted
- Soaps, shampoos and personal care
- Natural household cleaning products
Traditional Use
In French aromatherapy, niaouli oil is traditionally used in inhalation blends, skin care and oral care, and it is often chosen as a gentler alternative to eucalyptus. These are traditional uses, not approved medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Niaouli Oil should always be diluted before skin use. Oils high in 1,8-cineole should not be applied on or near the face of infants and young children. Avoid contact with eyes. Like other terpene-rich oils, it can oxidise over time, so store it properly. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Blending Tips
Niaouli blends well with eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, rosemary, pine, peppermint, lemon and lime.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and chemotype

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Niaouli is often used as a gentler partner to tea tree and eucalyptus in balms and inhalation blends. Ask for the cineole chemotype if you want a fresh, eucalyptus-like note.
