Myrtle Oil is a fresh, clean, slightly sweet and camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Myrtus communis, the common myrtle. It has a softer, gentler scent than eucalyptus and is used in aromatherapy, skin care, perfumery, liqueurs and personal care products.

Arizone International supplies Myrtle Oil in red and green types for aromatherapy brands, cosmetic manufacturers, perfumers and liqueur producers.

About Myrtle

Myrtle is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean, with small, glossy, aromatic leaves, white star-shaped flowers and dark blue-black berries. In ancient Greece and Rome, myrtle was sacred to Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of love, and it was used in wedding wreaths and bouquets. Myrtle sprigs are still included in some royal wedding bouquets in Britain. In Sardinia and Corsica, the berries are used to make the traditional liqueur Mirto. The oil is produced mainly in Morocco, Tunisia, Corsica, Spain and Turkey.

Red and Green Myrtle

  • Red MyrtleUsually from Morocco, with a warmer, sharper scent. It contains myrtenyl acetate and more 1,8-cineole.
  • Green MyrtleUsually from Corsica or Tunisia, with a fresher, softer, sweeter scent. It is higher in alpha-pinene and lower in myrtenyl acetate. Often preferred for aromatherapy and children's products.

Aroma and Composition

  • 1,8-CineoleGiving a fresh, eucalyptus-like note.
  • Alpha-PineneAdding a clean, piney freshness.
  • Myrtenyl AcetatePresent in red myrtle, adding a sweet, herbal note.
  • Linalool, Limonene and Linalyl AcetateContributing sweetness.

Applications

  • Aromatherapy blends for clear breathing and freshness
  • Skin care for oily or blemish-prone skin
  • Perfumery, especially fresh, herbal and aromatic accords
  • Liqueurs and flavours, where permitted
  • Soaps, shampoos and personal care products
  • Inhalation and steam blends

Safety and Dilution

Myrtle Oil should always be diluted before skin use. Oils rich in 1,8-cineole should not be used on or near the face of infants and young children. Like other terpene-rich oils, myrtle can oxidise over time, so store it properly. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.

Blending Tips

Myrtle blends well with lavender, bergamot, lemon, eucalyptus, rosemary, tea tree, cypress, clary sage and ginger.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Myrtus communis) and type (red or green)
  • Gas chromatography profile
  • Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
  • Aroma evaluation
  • Screening for adulteration with eucalyptus oil

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Myrtle hydrosol, the water collected during distillation, is also popular as a gentle toner.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Choose green myrtle for gentle aromatherapy and children's inhalation products, and red myrtle when a stronger, sharper note is needed. Myrtle is a softer alternative to eucalyptus in skin care for oily skin.
