Melissa Oil is the essential oil of Melissa officinalis, better known as lemon balm. It has a fresh, lemony, sweet and softly herbal aroma and is one of the most precious oils in aromatherapy and natural perfumery. Because true melissa oil is so rare, it is supplied in several grades, from 100% pure oil to rectified and blended versions for more affordable use.

Arizone International supplies Melissa Oil in pure and blended grades for aromatherapy brands, skin care companies, perfumers and wellness product makers.

Understanding Melissa Oil Grades

Very few oils have as many quality levels in the market as melissa. Because the plant yields so little oil, often below 0.1%, buyers will find these grades:

  • Melissa 100% (Pure)Distilled only from Melissa officinalis. Very expensive and produced in small quantities, mainly in France, Bulgaria, Germany, Ireland and Egypt.
  • Melissa Distilled Over Other PlantsSometimes called "melissa true", where melissa is co-distilled with lemon-scented plants such as lemongrass or lemon verbena to increase yield.
  • Melissa BlendA reconstruction made from natural oils such as lemon, lemongrass, litsea cubeba and citronella to recreate the melissa scent at a lower price.

We always label the grade clearly so you know exactly what you are buying.

About the Plant

Melissa is a gentle, bushy herb of the mint family with bright green, heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers. It is native to southern Europe and western Asia and has been grown in European monastery gardens for centuries. The name comes from the Greek word for honeybee, because bees are strongly attracted to its flowers.

Aroma and Composition

  • Geranial and NeralTogether forming citral, the source of the lemony scent.
  • Beta-Caryophyllene and Caryophyllene OxideGiving a soft, herbal depth that distinguishes pure melissa from simple citral oils.
  • Germacrene D, Citronellal and LinaloolAdding complexity.

Applications

  • Premium aromatherapy for calm and emotional balance
  • Natural perfumes and fine fragrances
  • Skin care for sensitive or blemish-prone skin
  • Luxury bath, body and massage products
  • Relaxation and sleep-support blends

Safety and Dilution

Melissa oil must be used at low dilutions because citral can irritate and sensitise skin. IFRA limits apply. It is not recommended during pregnancy, and people with glaucoma or thyroid conditions should seek advice. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Grade and botanical identity
  • Gas chromatography profile, including citral and caryophyllene
  • Specific gravity and refractive index
  • Aroma evaluation against reference samples
  • Screening for undeclared blending

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in small aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Always check the grade: pure melissa oil is very costly, while blended grades are much cheaper. For aromatherapy and natural perfumery, request a GC report showing both citral and beta-caryophyllene.
