Mentha Piperita Oil is the true peppermint oil, steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Mentha x piperita. It has a fresh, cool, sweet and intensely minty aroma and is one of the most widely used essential oils in the world, found in toothpaste, chewing gum, confectionery, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Mentha Piperita Oil in natural, rectified and triple-distilled grades for oral-care brands, confectionery and flavour companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and cosmetic businesses.
Piperita vs Arvensis
Two main mint oils are traded as "peppermint". Mentha piperita is the true peppermint, a natural hybrid of water mint and spearmint, with a sweeter, smoother and more rounded flavour. Mentha arvensis (corn mint or Japanese mint) contains much more menthol and is the main source of natural menthol crystals; its dementholised oil is cheaper and sharper. India is the world's leading producer of Mentha arvensis, while Mentha piperita is produced mainly in the USA (Oregon, Washington and Idaho), India, China and Europe. India also grows piperita in the mint belt of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Traditional Use and Research
Peppermint oil has been studied in enteric-coated capsules for digestive comfort, and it is recognised as a traditional herbal medicine in Europe for certain uses. These are research findings and approved uses for specific medicinal products, not claims for this raw material.
Safety and Dilution
Mentha Piperita Oil should always be diluted before skin use. It must not be applied on or near the face of infants and young children, as menthol can cause breathing problems. Avoid contact with eyes. People with acid reflux or gallbladder problems should seek advice before internal use. Use within IFRA, food and pharmacopoeia limits. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Mentha x piperita)
- Menthol, menthone, menthofuran and pulegone content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and flavour evaluation
- Screening for Mentha arvensis adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For toothpaste and chewing gum, ask for triple-distilled Mentha piperita oil, which has the cleanest flavour. For economical products, it can be blended with dementholised Mentha arvensis, as long as the label reflects the blend.
