It is used in speciality aromatherapy, natural personal care and perfumery.

About Monarda
Monarda is a group of aromatic perennials of the mint family native to North America. Its showy, shaggy flowers in red, pink, purple and white attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, which is why it is called bee balm. Native American peoples used monarda leaves in teas and traditional remedies. Monarda didyma is known as Oswego tea, after the Oswego people, and it became a substitute for imported tea after the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Its scent reminded early settlers of bergamot orange, giving it the name "wild bergamot", although it is not related to the citrus.
Chemotypes
The composition of monarda oil varies greatly between species and chemotypes:
- Thymol and Carvacrol TypesCommon in Monarda fistulosa and Monarda punctata, giving a strong, spicy, thyme- or oregano-like scent.
- Geraniol TypeFound in some Monarda fistulosa and M. citriodora, with a softer, rosy scent.
- Linalool TypeFound in some Monarda didyma, with a gentler, floral scent.
Buyers should request a GC report to confirm the chemotype.
Applications

- Oral-care products, where permitted (thymol type)
- Household cleaning products
- Aromatherapy blends
- Herbal and spicy fragrance accords
- Natural source of thymol, where permitted
Research Interest
Thymol and carvacrol, found in some monarda oils, have been widely studied for antimicrobial activity. Monarda punctata was once a commercial source of thymol in the USA. These are research findings and historical uses, not approved claims for this product.
Safety and Dilution
Thymol- and carvacrol-rich monarda oils are strong skin and mucous membrane irritants and must be well diluted. They should not be used on children or during pregnancy. Geraniol and linalool types are gentler but should still be diluted. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep out of reach of children.

Monarda oil is produced in small quantities, mainly in North America and Europe. Supply and composition can vary, so we recommend requesting a sample and GC report before a larger order.
