Mastic Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Mastic Oil is a fresh, balsamic, piney and slightly sweet essential oil steam distilled from mastic gum, the resin of Pistacia lentiscus var. chia, a shrub that grows almost only on the Greek island of Chios. It is a rare and valuable oil used in perfumery, liqueurs, oral care, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International helps buyers source Mastic Oil for perfumers, flavour houses, oral-care and cosmetic brands, and speciality aromatherapy companies.
The Tears of Chios
Mastic is harvested in the southern part of Chios, in a group of traditional villages known as the mastichochoria. In summer, growers make small cuts in the bark of the mastic trees, and a clear resin slowly seeps out and hardens into drops called "tears". These are collected by hand, cleaned and sorted. Chios mastic has been produced for more than 2,500 years and has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in the European Union. The traditional cultivation of mastic on Chios is also listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Mastic gum is chewed like chewing gum (the word "masticate" comes from it), and it is used in Greek and Middle Eastern sweets, ice cream, breads and liqueurs such as Mastika. In India, mastic is known as rumi mastagi and is used in Unani medicine and in some traditional sweets.
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-PineneUsually the main component, often 60% to 80%, giving a fresh, piney scent.
- MyrceneAdds a balsamic, slightly sweet note.
- Beta-Pinene, Limonene and LinaloolContributing freshness and depth.
The scent is fresh, resinous, balsamic and slightly sweet, like pine with a soft, creamy edge.
Applications
- Liqueurs and spirits, such as mastika-type drinks
- Confectionery, chewing gum and desserts
- Toothpaste and oral-care products
- Perfumery, especially fresh, resinous and Mediterranean accords
- Skin care and cosmetics
- Aromatherapy blends
Traditional Use
Mastic gum has been used in the Mediterranean and Middle East since ancient times for oral and digestive health, and it has been studied for these uses. These are traditional uses and research topics, not approved claims for the essential oil.
Safety and Dilution
Mastic Oil should be diluted before skin contact. Like other oils rich in alpha-pinene, it oxidises over time, and oxidised oil can irritate skin, so store it properly. People allergic to pistachio or other members of the cashew family (Anacardiaceae) may react. Use within IFRA standards and food flavour regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and origin (Chios PDO where required)
- Gas chromatography profile
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
- Screening for turpentine or synthetic adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in small aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Mastic oil is rare and costly, so it is used in small amounts to add a fresh, resinous character to fine fragrances, liqueurs and oral care. Ask for origin documents if you need Chios PDO mastic.
