Marjoram Oil is a warm, sweet, herbaceous and slightly spicy essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Origanum majorana, sweet marjoram. It is valued in aromatherapy, massage blends, perfumery and food flavours for its comforting, gentle aroma.
Arizone International supplies Sweet Marjoram Oil for aromatherapy brands, massage and spa product makers, flavour houses and fragrance companies.
About Sweet Marjoram
Sweet marjoram is a bushy herb of the mint family, native to the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus and Turkey. It is closely related to oregano but has a sweeter, milder flavour. In ancient Greece and Rome, marjoram was a symbol of happiness, and newlyweds were crowned with wreaths of it. It is widely used in European cooking, especially in sausages, stuffings, soups and tomato dishes. The oil is produced mainly in Egypt, Morocco, France, Spain and Tunisia. In India, marjoram (called marwa or murwa) is grown on a small scale in some states.
Sweet Marjoram vs Spanish Marjoram
The name "Spanish marjoram" is often used for Thymus mastichina, a type of thyme that produces an oil rich in 1,8-cineole. It has a sharper, eucalyptus-like scent and is quite different from true sweet marjoram. Please make sure to specify sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) if that is what you need.

Traditional Use
In aromatherapy, sweet marjoram oil is traditionally used in warming massage blends and in blends for relaxation and sleep. These are traditional aromatherapy uses and not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Sweet Marjoram Oil is generally regarded as mild, but it should always be diluted before skin use. Like other oils rich in terpenes, it can oxidise over time, so store it properly. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use except as a regulated food flavour.
Blending Tips
Marjoram blends well with lavender, bergamot, chamomile, cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, rosemary, orange and black pepper.
