Manuka Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Manuka Oil is a warm, earthy, honeyed and slightly spicy essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and small branches of Leptospermum scoparium, the manuka tree of New Zealand. It is valued in natural skin care, personal care and aromatherapy, and it is increasingly used as a premium alternative or partner to tea tree oil.
Arizone International supplies Manuka Oil for skin care brands, personal care manufacturers, aromatherapy companies and private label businesses.
About Manuka
Manuka is a flowering shrub or small tree native to New Zealand and parts of south-east Australia. It has small, prickly leaves and white or pink flowers. Bees that feed on manuka flowers produce the famous manuka honey. The Māori people have used manuka for generations in traditional remedies, making infusions from the leaves and bark. Early European settlers, including Captain Cook's crew, reportedly used the leaves to make a kind of tea, which is why manuka is also called a "tea tree", although it is a different plant from Australian tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia).
East Cape Manuka
The composition of manuka oil varies greatly by region. Oil from the East Cape region of New Zealand is especially prized because it is rich in beta-triketones, compounds that have been studied for their antimicrobial activity. Oils from other regions may be richer in sesquiterpenes or monoterpenes and have different properties.
Aroma and Composition
- Beta-TriketonesSuch as leptospermone, flavesone and isoleptospermone. High-grade East Cape oil may contain 20% to 30% or more.
- SesquiterpenesSuch as calamenene, cadinenes and copaene, giving a warm, woody, earthy character.
- MonoterpenesPresent in smaller amounts.
The scent is warm, earthy, honeyed and slightly spicy, softer than the sharp, medicinal smell of tea tree oil.
Applications
- Skin care for blemish-prone skin
- Natural deodorants and foot-care products
- Scalp-care shampoos and hair treatments
- Oral-care products, where permitted
- Aromatherapy blends
- Natural and premium personal care products
Research Interest
Laboratory studies have shown that manuka oil, especially triketone-rich oil, is active against a range of bacteria and fungi, in some studies more strongly than tea tree oil against certain bacteria. These are research findings and not approved medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Manuka Oil should always be diluted before skin use. A patch test is recommended. It is not recommended during pregnancy. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Leptospermum scoparium) and origin
- Total triketone content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and colour evaluation
- Screening for adulteration with other oils
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles and HDPE containers. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For premium skin care, ask for East Cape manuka with a stated triketone content on the GC report. Manuka is often combined with tea tree oil in blemish-care products for a softer, more honeyed scent.
