Mandarin Oil is a sweet, soft, juicy and gently floral citrus essential oil cold pressed from the peel of Citrus reticulata, the mandarin orange. It is one of the gentlest and most loved citrus oils, used in beverages, confectionery, perfumery, children's products, cosmetics and aromatherapy.
Arizone International supplies Mandarin Oil in green, yellow and red grades for flavour houses, beverage companies, fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.
About Mandarin
Mandarin oranges originated in China and Southeast Asia and were once given as gifts to Chinese officials, or mandarins, which may be how they got their name. Today, mandarin oil is produced mainly in Italy (especially Sicily and Calabria), Brazil, Argentina and Spain. In India, the Nagpur orange and Coorg orange are types of mandarin, and India is one of the world's largest producers of mandarin fruit, although most is eaten fresh.
Green, Yellow and Red Mandarin
Mandarin oil is produced from fruits picked at different stages of ripeness, and each gives a different oil:
- Green MandarinFrom unripe fruit. Fresh, sharp and slightly green.
- Yellow MandarinFrom partly ripe fruit. Balanced, sweet and fresh.
- Red MandarinFrom fully ripe fruit. The sweetest, richest and most fruity, with an orange-red colour.
Aroma and Composition
- LimoneneUsually 65% to 75%.
- Gamma-TerpineneOften 15% to 22%, adding freshness.
- Dimethyl AnthranilatePresent in small amounts but responsible for the characteristic sweet, slightly floral mandarin note. It also gives the oil a faint blue-violet fluorescence.
- Thymol and Alpha-SinensalMinor components adding complexity.
Applications
- Soft drinks, juices and citrus beverages
- Confectionery, desserts and food flavours
- Perfumes, colognes and body sprays
- Children's toiletries and gentle skin care
- Aromatherapy blends for calm and relaxation
- Candles, room sprays and home fragrance
Safety and Dilution
Mandarin oil is one of the gentler citrus oils and is generally considered non-phototoxic or only very slightly phototoxic. It should still be diluted before skin use. Like all citrus oils, it oxidises quickly and should be stored properly and used within its shelf life, because oxidised limonene can sensitise skin. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Mandarin blends well with lavender, neroli, petitgrain, chamomile, ylang-ylang, frankincense, sandalwood and other citrus oils.
Quality Parameters
- Grade (green, yellow or red) and origin
- Gas chromatography profile, including dimethyl anthranilate
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Evaporation residue
- Screening for synthetic limonene or orange oil adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store in a cool, dark place, ideally refrigerated.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Red mandarin gives the sweetest, most fruity note for drinks and children's products, while green mandarin adds a fresh, sharp top note to perfumes. Store mandarin oil cold and use opened packs quickly, as citrus oils oxidise fast.
