Labdanum Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Labdanum Oil is a rich, warm, sweet, balsamic and deeply amber aromatic material obtained from the sticky resin of Cistus ladanifer, the rockrose. It is one of the most important natural materials in perfumery and is the backbone of the classic "amber" accord. It is used in fine fragrances, attars, incense and luxury cosmetics.
Arizone International supplies Labdanum essential oil, absolute and resinoid for perfumers, attar makers, incense manufacturers and cosmetic brands.
About Labdanum
Cistus ladanifer is a shrub that grows on dry hillsides around the Mediterranean, especially in Spain, which is the main producer, as well as in Portugal, Morocco, Corsica and Crete. On hot days, its leaves and stems release a sticky, aromatic gum. In ancient times, shepherds in Crete collected labdanum by combing it from the beards and coats of goats that had grazed among the bushes. Special leather rakes were also used to gather it.
Today, the leaves and twigs are boiled in water to release the gum, which is then processed into different forms. Labdanum was also one of the key ingredients in the original chypre perfumes.
Forms of Labdanum
- Labdanum Essential OilSteam distilled from the gum or plant, with a lighter, fresher, more herbal-amber scent.
- Labdanum AbsoluteSolvent extracted from the gum, with a deep, rich, leathery and amber scent.
- Labdanum ResinoidA thick extract used as a strong fixative.
- Cistus OilSteam distilled from the leaves and twigs, fresher and more herbal.
Aroma and Composition
Labdanum's scent is warm, sweet, balsamic, leathery and slightly animalic, often compared to ambergris. Its composition is complex and includes labdane-type diterpenes, alpha-pinene, ambrox-like compounds, and many other molecules that together create its famous amber character.

Labdanum should be diluted before skin contact. A patch test is recommended. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Absolutes may contain trace residual solvents within permitted limits. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.

Labdanum comes from the sticky resin of the rockrose, Cistus ladanifer, and Spain is the main producer.
Choose the absolute for a deep, rich amber effect. The essential oil is lighter and fresher, and the resinoid works well as a strong fixative.
