About Laurel Berry Oil
Bay laurel is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean. Its leaves are the familiar bay leaves used in cooking, and in ancient Greece and Rome laurel wreaths crowned victors and poets. The tree's small, dark purple-black berries ripen in autumn. When pressed or boiled, they yield a thick, green, aromatic oil that contains both fatty oil and essential oil.
Laurel berry oil is produced mainly in Turkey (especially the Hatay region), Syria and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
Aleppo Soap
Aleppo soap is one of the oldest soaps in the world, traditionally made in the Syrian city of Aleppo. It is made from olive oil and laurel berry oil, cooked with lye, poured into large slabs, cut and aged for many months. The higher the percentage of laurel berry oil (often 5% to 40% or more), the more prized and costly the soap. Laurel oil gives the soap its distinctive aroma and is traditionally considered good for the skin and scalp.
Key Compounds
- Fatty AcidsLauric, oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids, which make up the fixed oil part.
- Essential Oil ComponentsSuch as 1,8-cineole, linalool, alpha-terpinyl acetate and eugenol, which give the aromatic character.
- ChlorophyllGives the oil its dark green colour.
Applications
- Aleppo-style and traditional olive-laurel soaps
- Shampoos and scalp-care products
- Hair oils and hair masks
- Skin care balms and creams
- Natural and artisan cosmetics
Laurel Berry Oil vs Laurel Leaf Oil
Laurel berry oil is a thick, fatty oil with an aromatic fraction, used mainly in soaps and cosmetics. Laurel leaf oil (bay laurel essential oil) is a steam-distilled essential oil from the leaves, used in perfumery, flavours and aromatherapy. Please specify which product you need.
Safety
Laurel berry oil can cause skin sensitisation in some people, and laurel-derived materials are subject to IFRA restrictions in fragrance use. A patch test is recommended, especially for leave-on products. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Supplied in HDPE containers, aluminium bottles or drums. Store in a cool, dark place. The oil may partly solidify in cool weather.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For Aleppo-style soap, laurel berry oil is usually used at 5% to 30% of the oils, with olive oil making up the rest. Higher laurel content gives a stronger aroma and a more premium soap.
