Hyssop Oil is a fresh, sweet, herbaceous and slightly camphoraceous essential oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Hyssopus officinalis, a small aromatic shrub of the mint family. It is used in perfumery, liqueurs, aromatherapy and speciality cosmetic products.
Arizone International supplies Hyssop Oil, including the gentler linalool type, for perfumers, liqueur producers, aromatherapy brands and speciality cosmetic companies.
About Hyssop
Hyssop is native to southern Europe, the Middle East and the region around the Caspian Sea. It has narrow, dark green leaves and spikes of blue, pink or white flowers that attract bees. The name comes from the Greek "hyssopos", and hyssop is mentioned in the Bible as a cleansing herb, although scholars believe the biblical plant may have been a different species. Hyssop has long been grown in monastery gardens, and it is one of the herbs used in the liqueur Chartreuse and in absinthe.
The oil is produced mainly in France, Hungary, Spain and the Balkans.
Two Types of Hyssop Oil
- Hyssopus officinalis (Pinocamphone Type)The common type, rich in pinocamphone and isopinocamphone, which are ketones that can affect the nervous system at high doses.
- Hyssopus officinalis var. decumbens (Linalool Type)A gentler type, rich in linalool and 1,8-cineole, with very little pinocamphone. Often preferred for aromatherapy.
Aroma and Composition
Common hyssop oil has a fresh, sweet, herbaceous and camphoraceous scent. Its main components usually include pinocamphone, isopinocamphone, beta-pinene and 1,8-cineole. The decumbens type is softer, sweeter and more floral because of its linalool content.
Applications
- Liqueurs and herbal spirits, such as Chartreuse-type and absinthe-type drinks, where permitted
- Perfumery, especially herbal, fougère and chypre accords
- Aromatherapy blends (preferably the decumbens type)
- Speciality soaps and cosmetics
Important Safety Note
Common hyssop oil contains pinocamphone, which can cause seizures in high doses. It must not be used by people with epilepsy or high blood pressure, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or on children. It must not be taken internally except as a regulated flavour. It should be used only at low, diluted levels, within IFRA standards and local regulations. The decumbens type is considered safer but should still be diluted and used carefully. Keep out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Hyssop blends well with lavender, rosemary, sage, clary sage, bay, geranium, myrtle and citrus oils.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity and variety (officinalis or decumbens)
- Pinocamphone, isopinocamphone and linalool content by gas chromatography

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
