Jasmine Sambac Absolute is a fresh, sweet, green and intensely floral aromatic extract obtained from the flowers of Jasminum sambac, known in India as mogra. It has a brighter, fresher and more fruity-green scent than Jasmine grandiflorum and is highly valued in fine perfumery, attars, luxury cosmetics and aromatherapy.

Arizone International supplies Jasmine Sambac absolute, concrete and mogra attar for perfumers, attar makers, luxury cosmetic brands and aromatherapy companies.

About Mogra

Jasminum sambac is an evergreen shrub with small, white, star-shaped flowers that bloom at night and release a powerful, sweet fragrance. It is native to South and Southeast Asia and is the national flower of the Philippines (sampaguita) and Indonesia (melati putih). In India, mogra is grown mainly in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other southern states, and Madurai malli is famous enough to have received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The flowers are used in garlands, gajras, weddings and temples, and jasmine tea in China is traditionally scented with sambac flowers.

How Jasmine Sambac Absolute Is Made

Like other jasmines, sambac flowers are too delicate for steam distillation. The flowers are picked in the early evening, just before they open, and extracted with a solvent to make a concrete. The concrete is then processed with alcohol to produce the absolute. Several hundred kilograms of flowers are needed for one kilogram of absolute. Mogra is also used in the traditional deg-bhapka distillation into sandalwood oil to make mogra attar.

Aroma and Composition

  • LinaloolOften a major component, giving a fresh, floral lift.
  • Benzyl AcetateAdds a sweet, fruity note.
  • Methyl AnthranilateGives a grape-like, sweet nuance.
  • IndoleAdds richness and depth.
  • Alpha-Farnesene and Cis-3-Hexenyl BenzoateContribute green, fresh notes.

Sambac vs Grandiflorum

Jasmine grandiflorum (chameli) is warmer, richer and more classically "jasmine". Jasmine sambac (mogra) is fresher, greener, fruitier and more intense. Perfumers often use both, sometimes together, for different effects.

Applications

  • Fine perfumery and white-floral accords
  • Mogra attars and traditional Indian perfumes
  • Luxury skin care and body oils
  • Hair oils and hair perfumes
  • Aromatherapy blends
  • Jasmine tea flavouring, where permitted

Safety and Dilution

Jasmine sambac absolute is powerful and should always be diluted before skin use. It may cause sensitisation in some people, and IFRA standards apply. A patch test is recommended. Absolutes may contain trace residual solvent within permitted limits. Not for internal use. Keep out of reach of children.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Jasminum sambac)
  • Gas chromatography profile
  • Aroma evaluation against reference samples
  • Residual solvent content
  • Colour and consistency

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium or amber glass bottles. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Mogra absolute gives a fresher, greener jasmine note than grandiflorum, so many perfumers blend both for a fuller effect. For attars, ask for mogra distilled into sandalwood oil in the traditional deg-bhapka method.
