Juniper Berry Oil is a fresh, clean, woody and slightly peppery essential oil steam distilled from the ripe, crushed berries of Juniperus communis, the common juniper. It is the flavour behind gin and is widely used in spirits, food flavours, perfumery, aromatherapy and personal care products.
Arizone International supplies Juniper Berry Oil for gin and spirit producers, flavour houses, fragrance companies and aromatherapy brands.
About Juniper
Common juniper is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree that grows across the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere, from Europe and North America to Central Asia and the Himalayas. Its "berries" are actually small, fleshy cones that take two to three years to ripen from green to blue-black. They are harvested by hand, often from wild plants, in countries such as Italy, Hungary, the Balkans, Albania and India. In India, juniper grows in the Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Juniper and Gin
Gin gets its name from "genever", the Dutch word for juniper. By law, gin in the EU must have a predominant juniper flavour. Juniper berries and oil are also used in other spirits, bitters and traditional European dishes such as sauerkraut and game meats.
Berry Oil vs Wood Oil
Juniper berry oil is distilled from the berries and has a fresh, sweet, balsamic scent. Juniper wood or twig oil is distilled from the wood and branches and is cheaper, with a harsher, more turpentine-like scent. Juniper berry oil is also different from cade oil (Juniperus oxycedrus) and Virginian cedarwood oil (Juniperus virginiana).
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-PineneUsually the main component, giving a fresh, piney note.
- Myrcene and SabineneAdding a sweet, spicy freshness.
- Limonene and Terpinen-4-olContributing a clean, bright character.
- Beta-Caryophyllene and Germacrene DAdding a woody depth.
Applications
- Gin, genever and spirit flavours
- Food flavours, sauces and meat products
- Perfumery, especially fresh, woody and masculine fragrances
- Aromatherapy blends for freshness and clarity
- Massage oils and body care
- Soaps, deodorants and personal care
Safety and Dilution
Juniper Berry Oil should be diluted before skin contact. Like other oils rich in monoterpenes, it oxidises over time, and oxidised oil can irritate or sensitise skin, so store it properly. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy and by people with kidney conditions. Use within IFRA standards and food flavour regulations. Keep out of reach of children.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Juniperus communis berry)
- Gas chromatography profile
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma and flavour evaluation
- Screening for wood oil or turpentine adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For gin and botanical spirits, juniper berry oil helps keep the juniper character consistent from batch to batch. Make sure you are buying berry oil rather than cheaper wood or twig oil, and ask for a GC report.
