Ho Wood Oil
Part of our Oils range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Ho Wood Oil is a soft, sweet, floral and slightly woody essential oil steam distilled from the wood and branches of the linalool chemotype of the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora ct. linalool. It is one of the richest natural sources of linalool and is used in perfumery, aromatherapy, skin care and soaps. It is also widely used as a sustainable alternative to rosewood oil.
Arizone International supplies Ho Wood Oil for perfumers, aromatherapy brands, cosmetic manufacturers and aroma chemical users.
A Special Camphor Tree
The camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) exists in several natural chemotypes. The ordinary type produces camphor, while the "ho" type produces an oil rich in linalool, with very little camphor. Ho wood and ho leaf oils are produced mainly in China and Taiwan. Ho leaf oil, distilled from the leaves, is similar but often even higher in linalool.
A Rosewood Alternative
Rosewood oil (Aniba rosaeodora), from the Amazon, was once a very popular source of natural linalool. Overharvesting led to a sharp decline in rosewood trees, and the species is now listed in CITES Appendix II. Ho wood oil has a similar sweet, floral-woody scent and a similar linalool content, so it has become a popular, more sustainable alternative in perfumery and aromatherapy.
Aroma and Composition
- LinaloolUsually 80% to 95%, giving a sweet, fresh, floral and woody scent.
- CamphorPresent only in small amounts in good-quality oil.
- 1,8-Cineole and Other TerpenesMinor components.
Applications
- Perfumery, as a soft floral-woody heart note and as a source of natural linalool
- Aromatherapy blends for relaxation and calm
- Skin care products, massage oils and body oils
- Soaps, shampoos and personal care products
- Natural linalool for aroma chemical and flavour use
Safety and Dilution
Ho Wood Oil is generally regarded as mild, but it should always be diluted before skin use. Linalool oxidises when exposed to air, and oxidised linalool can cause skin sensitisation. The oil should therefore be stored in full, tightly closed containers, away from heat and light, and used within its shelf life. Linalool is a listed fragrance allergen in the EU. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Blending Tips
Ho wood blends well with lavender, bergamot, orange, geranium, rose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, cedarwood and frankincense.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Cinnamomum camphora ct. linalool)
- Linalool and camphor content by gas chromatography
- Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- Aroma evaluation
- Screening for synthetic linalool adulteration
Packaging and Storage
Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums, with nitrogen flushing on request. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ho wood oil is a good linalool-rich base for relaxing aromatherapy blends and for replacing rosewood in older formulas. Buy it in pack sizes you can use quickly, because linalool oxidises once a container is opened.
