Henna Oil is an aromatic oil associated with Lawsonia inermis, the henna plant. The name is used for two main products in India: mehndi oil, a blend of essential oils such as eucalyptus, clove and cajeput used to help henna paste give a darker stain, and henna flower oil or attar (mehndi attar), a rich, earthy and floral fragrance traditionally made from henna flowers. Henna leaf infused oil is also used in hair care.
Arizone International supplies Henna Oil in these forms for henna and mehndi product makers, hair oil brands, attar and perfume manufacturers, and cosmetic companies.
India and Henna
India is the world's largest producer and exporter of henna. Most Indian henna is grown in the Pali district of Rajasthan, especially around Sojat, which is famous for its high-quality henna leaves. Henna is used for mehndi designs at weddings and festivals, for natural hair colouring, and in traditional remedies.
Types of Henna Oil
- Mehndi Oil (Henna Essential Oil Blend)A blend of essential oils rich in terpenes, often eucalyptus, cajeput, tea tree, clove or lavender. It is applied to the skin before or with henna paste to help release lawsone and give a darker, longer-lasting stain.
- Henna Flower Attar (Mehndi Attar)A traditional fragrance made by distilling henna flowers into sandalwood oil in the classic deg-bhapka method of Kannauj. It has an earthy, green, floral and slightly spicy scent.
- Henna Leaf Infused OilHenna leaves infused in a carrier oil such as sesame or coconut, used in traditional hair oils.
Key Compounds
- LawsoneThe red-orange dye in henna leaves that binds to keratin in skin and hair. It is found in henna leaves and paste, not in essential oils.
- Terpenes (in Mehndi Oil)Such as 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpineol, which help the stain develop.
- Aroma Compounds (in Flower Attar)Including ionones, which give henna flowers their distinctive scent.
Applications
- Henna cones and mehndi paste preparation
- Hair oils, hair packs and natural hair colour products
- Traditional attars and perfumes
- Soaps and cosmetics with a henna fragrance
Safety
Natural henna is generally safe, but "black henna" products containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD) can cause severe skin reactions and should be avoided. Our henna oils do not contain PPD. Mehndi oil blends are concentrated and should be used only in the amounts recommended for henna application. A patch test is advised. Henna should not be used on babies or on people with G6PD deficiency. Keep out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
