It is used in perfumery as an economical woody base note and fixative, as well as in soaps, cosmetics and incense.
Arizone International supplies Gurjun Balsam Oil for fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, incense makers and aroma chemical users.
About Gurjun
Gurjun (garjan) trees are tall hardwood trees of the Dipterocarp family that grow in the forests of north-east India, the Andaman Islands, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia. When the trunk is cut, the tree releases a thick oleoresin called gurjun balsam, or wood oil. This balsam has long been used in India and Southeast Asia as a varnish, a waterproofing agent for boats and baskets, and in traditional remedies for the skin.
The balsam is steam distilled to produce a pale yellow, viscous essential oil. Indonesia and India are the main producers.
Aroma and Composition
- Alpha-GurjuneneUsually the main component, often 50% or more, giving a woody, balsamic note.
- Beta-CaryophylleneAdds a warm, spicy-woody character.
- Alloaromadendrene and Other SesquiterpenesContribute depth.
The scent is mild, woody, balsamic and slightly sweet, with good fixative properties.
Applications
- Perfumery, as a woody base note and fixative
- Soaps, detergents and household fragrances
- Incense sticks and agarbatti
- Woody and oriental fragrance accords
- Source of sesquiterpenes for aroma chemical production
A Note on Adulteration
Gurjun balsam oil has a mild scent and is inexpensive, so it has historically been used to adulterate more costly oils such as patchouli, copaiba, vetiver and sandalwood. Reputable buyers test these oils by gas chromatography for gurjunene. We supply gurjun balsam oil openly and correctly labelled for legitimate use.
Traditional Use
In traditional Indian and Southeast Asian practice, gurjun balsam was applied to the skin in folk remedies and used in ointments. These are traditional uses and not approved health claims.
Safety and Dilution
Gurjun Balsam Oil should be diluted before skin contact. A patch test is recommended. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
Blending Tips
Gurjun blends well with patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood, frankincense, clove and lavender.
Quality Parameters

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Gurjun balsam is an economical woody fixative for soaps, detergents and incense. If you buy costly oils such as patchouli or sandalwood, ask for GC reports that check for gurjunene, as gurjun is sometimes used to adulterate them.
