Guaiac Wood Oil is a soft, smoky, woody and slightly rosy essential oil steam distilled from the wood and sawdust of Bulnesia sarmientoi, a tree from the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay and Argentina. It is a thick, semi-solid oil used mainly in perfumery as a warm, smoky base note and fixative, and in soaps and cosmetics.

Arizone International supplies Guaiac Wood Oil for perfumers, fragrance houses, soap and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.

About Guaiac Wood

The oil is often called "guaiacwood" because the wood resembles true guaiacum (lignum vitae), although it comes from a different tree. Bulnesia sarmientoi, also known as palo santo in Paraguay (not to be confused with Bursera graveolens, the palo santo of Peru and Ecuador), grows in the dry forests of the Gran Chaco. Its wood is extremely hard and heavy. The oil is distilled from wood chips and sawdust, often from timber industry waste.

Because of concerns about overharvesting, Bulnesia sarmientoi was listed in CITES Appendix II. The oil and wood can be traded, but exports require proper CITES documentation.

Aroma and Composition

  • GuaiolA sesquiterpene alcohol that is the main component, often 25% to 40%.
  • BulnesolAnother major sesquiterpene alcohol.
  • Alpha-Guaiene and Alpha-BulneseneContributing woody notes.

The scent is soft, smoky, woody and balsamic, with a gentle rose-like and tea-like nuance. Guaiac wood oil often solidifies at room temperature and must be gently warmed before use.

Applications

  • Perfumery, as a smoky, woody base note and fixative
  • Rose accords, where it adds a soft, tea-rose nuance
  • Oriental, oud-type and woody fragrances
  • Soaps and personal care products
  • Incense and home fragrance
  • Guaiyl acetate production, a derivative used in perfumery

Blending Tips

Guaiac wood blends well with rose, geranium, sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood, patchouli, frankincense, labdanum and vanilla. It is often used to add depth and smoky warmth to oud-type accords.

Safety and Dilution

Guaiac Wood Oil is generally regarded as mild, but it should always be diluted before skin contact. A patch test is recommended. Use within IFRA standards and local regulations. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. Not for internal use.

Quality Parameters

  • Botanical identity (Bulnesia sarmientoi)
  • Guaiol and bulnesol content by gas chromatography
  • Congealing point, specific gravity and refractive index
  • Aroma evaluation
  • CITES documentation

Packaging and Storage

Supplied in aluminium bottles, HDPE containers or drums. Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place. If solidified, warm gently in a water bath before use.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Guaiac wood oil is usually solid at room temperature, so melt it gently in a warm water bath and mix before weighing. It is a classic partner for rose and oud accords, adding a smooth, smoky, tea-like depth to the finished blend.
