Grapefruit Oil is a fresh, bright, sweet and slightly bitter citrus essential oil cold pressed from the peel of Citrus paradisi. It has the lively, juicy aroma of fresh grapefruit and is used in beverages, food flavours, perfumery, cosmetics, aromatherapy and household products.
Arizone International supplies Grapefruit Oil in pink and white types for flavour houses, beverage companies, fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers, and aromatherapy brands.
About Grapefruit
Grapefruit is a relatively young citrus fruit. It first appeared in Barbados in the 18th century as a natural cross between sweet orange and pomelo. Its name is said to come from the way the fruit grows in clusters, like grapes. Today, grapefruit oil is produced mainly in the United States (Florida and Texas), Israel, South Africa, Argentina and Mexico, largely as a by-product of the juice industry.
Pink vs White Grapefruit Oil
Pink grapefruit oil comes from pink or red varieties and has a slightly sweeter, softer scent. White grapefruit oil has a sharper, more bitter scent. Both are widely used; the choice depends on the desired aroma and price.
Aroma and Composition
- LimoneneUsually 85% to 95% of the oil.
- NootkatonePresent in small amounts, often under 1%, but responsible for the characteristic grapefruit aroma. It is one of the most valuable citrus flavour compounds.
- Myrcene, Octanal and DecanalAdding freshness and depth.
- 1-p-Menthene-8-thiolA trace sulphur compound with an extremely powerful grapefruit note.
Applications
- Soft drinks, juices and citrus beverages
- Confectionery and food flavours
- Perfumes, colognes and body sprays
- Shower gels, shampoos and body care
- Aromatherapy blends for an uplifting, energising mood
- Natural cleaning products and air fresheners
Safety and Dilution
Grapefruit Oil can cause mild phototoxic reactions because it contains small amounts of furocoumarins, and IFRA sets limits for its use in leave-on products. It should always be diluted before skin use. Like other citrus oils, it oxidises quickly, and oxidised limonene can sensitise skin, so it should be stored in full, tightly closed containers and used within its shelf life. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children.
Note: eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice can interact with many medicines. This is caused by compounds in the fruit, not generally by the essential oil used in small amounts in flavours, but anyone on medication should seek advice before consuming grapefruit products.
Blending Tips
Grapefruit blends well with bergamot, lemon, lime, orange, lavender, rosemary, geranium, ylang-ylang, cypress and juniper.
